My beater, still under construction: For more shots, see my build thread: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=540269
Big window shortbed stepside is the most desirable (my opinion). Mine is a 58 I bought back in 74. I didn't add a clip, just added a Volare frontend. Rolled it right under. I changed the rear end to a 10 bolt, and reversed the spring hangers (cut the rivets off). I moved the spring pads to the bottom of the axle and notched the frame for clearance. The Volare works good. Steering box shaft lines up with the cab almost perfectly. Biggest problem was making an engine mount around the steering box. It's old school. Bags are probably the way to go now. The 55-57 sheet metal will bolt on to a 58, except the hood hinges are different, and the frame rails are a few inches longer in front. They changed the hinges in 58 and ran a bolt to the fenders for strength. The 55-57 hinges won't line up to the 58 cab unless you drill your own holes and reinforce the area.
Where are the best places to source one of these in the states guyz??? Apart from the usual suspects i.e. ebay, hemmings, auto trader classic are there other websites where u r a good chance to pick one up. Thanks
If a project, i.e. one to build yourself then Craigslist in the Southwest. California, Arizona, New Mexico, Maybe Colorado but they do have a lot of snow there.
My '55. She's a driver work-in-progress. I don't have room for a derelict so she's gotta stay running. Bought her last year looking like this: and this (ugh!): Now she looks like this but all primered green now: Cleaned up the 283, Pertronix, fan shroud, go-faster-valve-covers, etc: Some interior rattle can work: Before: After:
Oh, thank you. It's just rattle can paint to make it tolerable while I work on it mechanically. Rustoleum Sage Green and Krylon Celery.
Here's my 55' when I got it and where its at now. Its got a 283 with a TH400. Plan is to go satin black and make it badass!
When I was a kid I hated the GMC grill. Now? I LOVE it. If I'd found one I'd much prefer having it. The big chrome is iconic of 50's era vehicles
Anyone else got some pics of their rides or some websites where I can find more info about the Task Force/Cameos/Apaches???? Many thanks.
My '59 Apache 3600 longbed fleetside. Original V8 truck w/sm420 4 speed. Swapped the Eaton rear for a Dana 60 w/3:55s, so now I can actually drive it on the highway. From Nevada, almost no rust, although I did replace the cab corners. Fun truck to drive...it's a freakin tank. Wouldn't mind trading it for a '57 3100, though. Chris
A few of "Ol'Blue" tuggin' her bunkhouse. I call her my sculpture. One of these days I'll lose all the bondo & chicken wire so I can get better gas mileage........
Here's mine- When I sold it, it was a 3200 long bed w/dump hydraulics, 292 w/4 speed & 15! rear leaf springs. When I bought it back 15 years later, it's got a 4" dropped front axle, stepped rear frame to make the cameo bed fit and I like it the way it is. I will be adding a big back window from a donor cab.
Thanks Preacher, it is a lot of fun. Here's a couple of the inside, all plugs into a regular 110 outlet or my Honda generator.
This thread hasn't seen the light of day for a while and I think it's worth refreshing with some new pics
