You're right Rick. A chopped top is definitely NOT mild....

 

My 1957 Safari wagon is pretty mild- Lowered, 15" wheels with Olds Fiesta flipper caps. Shaved the handles, antenna, mirror, fender tops, side and tailgate trim. Tried to leave enough brightwork to keep it all balanced. The '48 Lincoln push button door handles trip quite a few people up.
Also repainted stock-ish colors with lots of pearl...

Damn it all, with a second child on the way I'm gonna have yo contribute to this thread by getting on my damn '54 soon. I've got it all planned out I just have been neck deep in hot rods that I haven't had the push to start. One thing is for sure, it'll be late 50's and mild. Think Duan Steck's 2nd version of Moonglow if he didn't have the balls to chop it.

I don't see that as a mild custom. That's a lowered stocker with a louvered hood. Not that its a bad thing, as this is just how I plan my '50 to be finished. Cool shoebox though.

 

It's not important to make me happy, but keeping this thread on track is...

But since your in the know... maybe you can tell me the difference between a taildragger and a lead sled. I am working on a 51 shoebox. I am going to make mods to it after I get it running. So by this definition, it may be a Mild custom. But I was going to drops the ass and it going to be a tail dragger. BUt a buddy of mine says that if I drop the ass end, and make mods to it... it is a leadsled. I will e using some lead here and there.

So will be car be a leadsled, taildragger or mild custom?

I just get to the point where I just say it is a hot rod. If it is a 64 and lower, hot rod. up is muscle car.

Actually the term "leadsled" doesn't mean much these days...back when that was no bondo, lead was used...it used to be a derogatory term, much as "hot rod" was in the late '40's/early '50's...these days, leading is almost a lost art, but the name stuck.

A mild kustom is one that does not have a lot of body mods...just lowered, nosed, decked, maybe shaved door handles, a mild grille change, whitewalls, hubcaps and skirts.

All three, all at the same time... those are just "labels," disregard most of them and call it what you like.

A taildragger in the truest sense of the term is a custom build using a car model that predates fenders that are fully enveloped into the body so really anything pre 1948. Some still use the term for later model builds but most will say that seperate and distinct fenders is what really denotes a taildragger.

As mentioned Leadsled came about due to the use of lead in the build but I think these days it kind of refers to full customs built in the style of 1948 to about the mid 50's. Think Barris, Ayala etc.

Mild customs are customs that have not had a major body modification such as a chop, section anything pancaked etc.

As 40StudeDude mentioned though it really doesn't matter what term is applied to your car as long as you like it and enjoy it that is all that really matters.

The '54 was built by Gary Howard for Jimmie Vaughan, I think, and that picture might have been taken before it got its silver metalflake top. Very nice understated custom.
