went to a local vintage vehicle show that had a few tools and car parts stands

found this lucas brand all metal bomb shape 12v lamp , the tail fin section turns to wind up the wire inside

never seen one like this before ,im really happy to have it

    would it be 1950s age?

During the early to late 50's everyone was on the rocket kick. We were entering the space age and all the manufacturers of everything from cars to vacuum cleaners wanted to portray that they were "futuristic" and part of that era. If you look at old TV and print ads from that time the buzz words were "space age styling" and stuff like that. Even magazines like Popular Mechanics were predicting by 2000 we would all be riding around in flying cars. :D

That light you have looks to me like it was from the 50's and was made to capitalize on that trend.

Ummmm....I still can't figure out why? or what it's really for.
    Someone explain, please.

    Oh....it does look cool........

  12. Well in case you're not kidding. It is a trouble light to hang under the hood (or in this case bonnet) to see what you're doing in the dark.

That is very cool! I would be a proud owner of something like that!

cleaned it up today , its really well made , the hook has a rubber buffer inside with 2 locking nuts to be sure it stays on lol

the moving parts are all greased

and it looks like the main nose part is made from brass..so might look cool polished up but i think i will leave it stock for now

  14. Thats a neat piece!
To bad it has that dirty word LUCAS on it. :p

  19. I think the OP has already worked out that the special 6 volt Lucas smoke has already been replaced with the newer and much thicker 12 volt Lucas smoke !!

If it's made by Lucas, look for the selector switch that all Lucas lighting has. It should be a three position knob with the following settings: "Dim," "Flicker," and "Ignite"

No, not automotive at all! That's actually from the Lucas Medical Division. They were shut down in 1954 after one of those shorted and let the smoke out of a patient.
This was how a colonoscopy was conducted before 1982 when transistorized cameras became small enough...
Basically, the patient had to swallow that thing and keep the cord hanging out of his mouth, sometimes for as long as three days. The doctor waited down at the other end for the right moment to have a look and plugged in the upper end to a modified battery charger.
It's rare...after the unfortunate barbecue I mentioned, hospitals would only use the Delco ones with real insulation on the wires. Lawyers spoil everything...

Bruce, I have enjoyed reading and learning from your posts. I gotta say however, that was one post I could have lived without. I am now going in for a lobotomy (spelling?) to see if I can get rid of that image.:D
    Oh ya, cool find.
