Linseed oil over patina

Hey guys.
My truck has some surface rust and patina. I read a lot about guys putting linseed oil on the rods to kind of give the darker wet look. So I decided to try it. I love the darker look but my truck came out shinier then expected. Anyone know how to tone down the sheen. I brushed it on and it has been drying for about 24 hrs. It kind of has a rubbery feel. I'm fine with the way it looks but if anyone knows how to tone down the glossiness it would be appreciated.

Drive it down a dusty road or get a real paint job.

 

If that's the look you really want, why not clear coat it?

get rid of the rust, rust is stupid.

 

rust makes you go faster!

and patina makes you look better.

 

Because I didn't didn't want to pay for one and deal with it when it starts pealing

It would look better painted. When I see a car or truck with rust I think ...ratrod.

A satin or semi-gloss clear would be better, me thinks. Gary

 

You think rat rod because it has some rust on it. Is that what you call a rat rod. This thing isn't pieced together with 17 different cars. Every body panel is original all the way down to that paint is left.

Try a flattening agent in the linseed oil.

i think a dirt rub and rinse would get you where you want.. unless that's too simple for you. ?

 

It's yours and you can do what you want to it. I think it looks great and you are protecting it to.

 

Paint it...

 

be very careful with how you dispose of the rags you used. as the lindseed oil offgasses it gets REALLY hot and can/does spontaneously combust. I thought it was BS until I was working on "patina" on some wood panels for a museum exhibit that used lindseed oil. my volunteer who was applying the oil took the rags he was using and pitched them in the trash can beside his garage and came out an hour or so later to find the trash can smoldering. could have been much worse had he not caught it.

Anybody can paint one...BORING! Your truck looks great. If you paint it, it will look like everybody elses. Screw that.

 

Patina is latin for it sucks to do body work

 

If you decide to paint it later, how hard will it be to remove all the oil?

 

Linseed oil is one of my favorite finishes................for garden tools, handles and shovels. It takes AGES to dry, you think a Gnat in primer or paint is a pain in the ass? Try that truck after 40 miles down the highway! It will look like 50 grit!

It's already dry. Doesn't take long in 103* Texas heat

 

I generally like paint...but I think it looks kinda cool.

 

I don't know a thing about using linseed oil on car bodies but one would think it would help it from rusting more. I dig your truck and the fact that you like it the way it is and you're obviously taking good care of it. Right on.

 

That's what I tell everyone that asked what color are you going to paint it. You know it I had a $30 rattle can flat black paint job on here they wouldn't be saying a damn thing. It's something about the rust color that just pisses some people off.

 

By the way, I'm interested in how it works over the next few months. Keep us posted. I've got a 50 Ford that treatment might work on.
