Just found this today 327 stock bore solid lifters TRW popups, flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, deep groove pulley, long oil pan. Wish I new some history on this motor. Front pad never stamped. Po has had it for years got it from a guy that was doing work at someones house that wanted to get rid of it.
Someone posted an identical engine here about three weeks ago, same oil pan and decked with no stamped numbers.
Oops forgot the link. Has to be the same engine though, http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=703841&highlight=327+corvette
Sure does look like the same motor, doesnt it? Heres the std. bore, '66 date code sj 327 thats going in my O/T Chevy II.
henry 29 your right . I love the HAMB, info you can't get anywhere else. I saw this motor on CL early last week. Called about it, but was so busy at work and never got over to look at it. I have a motor just like it in my 55 but mines 30 over 331. Well by yesterday I just about had that 327 on CL out of my mind. Was at the garage working on my 55. The phone rings its the call service I have a service call in Carmel In. Thats the same place the 327 is for sale on CL. Oh well I don't need another old motor sitting around. I go to the call, what do I see in the home owner garage under a car cover. Looks like a mid 60 corvett, I say to him looks like a vett. Ya it was my Dads he passed and its mine now. After telling him Im sorry about his Dads passing and getting his A/c blowing cold air. I had to ask what color is the corvett, that all it took another hour spent talking about the times behind the wheel of this 327 powered 67 vett. Well Im back in the service truck and I think I should see if that 327 on CL has sold yet I hope so. I make the call, and like something I had no control of what so ever. The motor is in the back of the van, then on the motor stand in my garage next to my its brother 331. Funny how things happen, you know I can't wait to pull the cam and check the grind. Off road gm or what. Ron
I hear ya . We don't "need" these cool old motors, but they sometimes end up in our way in the shop. I don't do much with sbc anymore, but if I was, I'd be more than happy with that one. nice purchase. (if it were me, I'd be out looking for the early vette 2x4 setup for it)
Yea, I had too twist his arm, turn on my huge magnet to pull his service truck my direction, and then convince him, that little noise he was hearing in back of his head was that 327 on CL....... Funny it is a small world, because when I meet carpok, before I knew he was carpok on here, I was about to ask him if he heard of the HAMB, but it slipped my mind at the time watching him grab that motor and load it in his truck like a man on a self obssessed mission to claim another 327 to keep it's brother company....... And as Paul Harvey used to say,"Now you know the rest of the story"......
Cool on the score but just one question. You say "Front pad never stamped" could it be a possibility that the suffix code was milled off? Did you check the deck height? ... I am curious only because I have never thought that a sbc left the factory with no codes .... even the factory replacements.
Deuces Ill get some pictures of the CC soon. Just some pictures of the 331 from a few years back. after it was rescued from some long storage. Ron
I pulled the solid lifter cam the stamped numbers on the back of the cam are 725U. The cast numbers between the lobs are 384, 3846 and GWO. Any help to what it is?
That casting number says it's a '67 327 or 350. I have a '65 327 engine in my shop with no pad stamp, it was bought over the counter by my buddy.
Love the 327 Chevys! I was looking for just about any SBC when I stumbled across my late 60's 327 in a neighbor's garage in 2010. His son had put the '68 Chevelle engine in a late 60's Chevy truck, and when sold the truck he offered it for less if the buyer wanted it without the engine. Buyer took the truck, but not the engine. I figured a 327 would be great for my Austin gasser project, so grabbed it. It had the wrong late model heads on it, but I recently bought a pair of rebuilt old camel hump 2.02 heads, so it's now the way I wanted it to be!
It has been about 25 years or more so this is from memory...if I recall correctly the early 327's had small journals and the later had the large journal crank... worked in parts back then so I cross referenced crank numbers and the 327 large journal and the 307 crank had the same numbers... I built a 350 block with 307 crank and can't remember for sure about the pistons and rods but it basically made it a 327 motor...ran it for years in 72 SS and still have the motor in the shop
I bought one last week that will go back standard. Also got a 4 barrell maifold for a holley and a set of reworked 1.94 double humps
I have a 68 vette with 327-350HP, 291 202 heads, bored .60, Mickey Thompson 11.15 pistons, M21 4 speed close ratio trans and posi and Banjo Mathews shop balanced it...that was in 84....it still is a honky tonk....what a joy to drive...I am in NO hurry to finish my 49 chevy 2 door fleetline.
Just to another look at the cam from my 327. This is for future info to anyone who might care. On the back its stamped 725U between the lobs toward the front of the cam cast numbers 3849 and on the other side of the lob cast 346 so we have 3849346 30-30 cam. And around the fuel pump cam is paint color code looks to be dark yellow. Ron
I pulled the pan today on the 327 the crank looks to have had some balance work on it. Casting no. 3884577 also stamped on the front is CHEAH 246. Im thinking the shop that did the balance, any ideas of who? pistons are Gm 3866954, rod and mains bearings standard, with Gm 57792 bearings, Rods have cast numbers 387, 1845. Pressed in pickup on the oil pump. Something strange about this motor that don't add up. All stock bolts standard bore and stock heads gm rod and main bearging. I would have thought the crank to be stock. Ron
It is 657 block used in 66-67 engines. the 462 head is dated L-68 or Nov 68, which were 2.02 intake big heads. Pistons are the 350hp pop-up style
The heads look like 1.94/1.50 heads to me. There is quite a bit of space between the valves and I don't see the factory machined relief in the chamber on the outside of the intake valve that the factory 2.02s had. They're still good heads, even if they aren't 2.02s.
