Preserving Patina

I've got a 51 Plymouth w/ a lot of surface rust. As I've ground it off, I really like the shading and metal variance, etc: patina.

So, I'd like to spray something clear over it to preserve and protect, but still let the metal shine through. I need some advice, as I'm getting some very contradictry answers from friends who I know and respect and have experience.

In a perfect world, Eastwood would still make clear Rust Encapsulator. But it doesn't.

Here are other things I've heard/considered:

1. Clear Por-15. Needs a clearcoat because it isn't UV resistant. Friend #1 says it will eventually peel off in sheets if used on car sheetmetal exterior.

2. Clearcoat. Friend #1 says it's just like paint, but w/o the color. So should go on body fine. Friend #2 says it needs primer--thereby eliminating whole reason for using.

3. Rustoleum clear. Uncertain--no one has experience.

That's not patina. That is old paint, rust and bare metal.
Would you sew half your upholstery and call it done?
Would you weld half the chassis and call it done?
Never mind.

 

Preserve it by grinding all the rust and other shit off and painting it properly!

Boiled linsead oil cut 50% with acetone will give you the look and protection you want. I used it on several cars and currently on my pickup. Fuck what everone else says! if you like it that way run it! Its your car to do as you please. but trust me the linsead oil works great.

This is patina: original paint worn a tad thin in a few places from years of polishing by previous owners. No signs of neglect and no rust.
I knew a long time owner of the car when he was in his 70's or 80's and didn't drive the car out of town because it didn't have a gas gauge 20 years ago when he was a customer. Then one day I saw it headed up the road on a trailer.


And no it isn't my car.

I did rattle can clear over mine, it has some bare metal spots but no rust. We sanded it with 800 grit for a tooth and sprayed it panel by panel.
We wanted to preserve the life and times of the car and we already have two cars that spend most of their lives in the garage. This is a driver

 

True patina is like a fine wine. You can't "preserve" it. You either let it continue, or pop the cork and drink it.
