I have a 283 front mount SBC with three speed connected. Never put one on a stand, whats the best stand to use so I can work on it, paint it etc keeping them together? I have the in the back of my truck right now, and am getting a Hoist today. Thanks guys
How about something like this...? Bout as easy as it gets... Does your 283 have side mount perches...?
I needed a way to store a 302 with attached AOD trans. So, I got one of these from Speedway. Basically outriggers attached to the engine motor mount bolt holes. The tranny rested on a 2 x 4. The stand is $43.
Since you probably want to inspect the clutch, or replace it, as well as the two rear freeze plugs, you really ought to take it apart. It's not rocket science.
Ya, I left the chain and picker attached while I degreased the engine and trans together prior to placing the combo into the engine bay. I wouldn't recommend long term storage like this but certainly you could clean and paint up the engine and trans still coupled together this way.
Well I was going to take it apart at some time as I am going to mate it to my ford trans with OD. I need to get it off my truck right now and onto something that I can get to the engine. I would prefer to leave it one piece untill I am ready to install.
I installed mine together, its much easier to bolt the trans and engine together standing than laying on your back...
I would separate the two and leave the bellhousing attached to the transmission. Pick up a couple of Harbor Freight engine stands, one for the motor and one for the transmission. A Chevy bell housing will bolt right to a standard engine stand with 4 appropriately sized bolts and you can work on it, paint it, whatever. Makes it a lot easier and safer to move around that way.
