Possibly the first car with a sbc to be entered in the 500 was the Helse Spl. in 1960. Didn't take long to figure out they were out to lunch and a Offy was swapped in, but still to no avail, and it was a DNQ too. Gotta wonder if tipping the motor over like that, with a stock oil pan, might not have had something to do with it.

The old 1957 car reworked for 1960?

the Chevy removed prior to Q so I guess the article about The San Diego Steel car being first to attempt to Q is correct.

I would like to know what method they used to not only keep the oil around the pickup, but keep it out of the right bank with all those steady G's...especially with a wet sump oil capacity. Or maybe they didnt.

Jim, I was just being sarcastic >< It was dry sumped (external oil tank) I'm sure the stock pan was just on there for the photo shoot.

I wonder why didn't they lean it to the left, dry sump or not, like a super modified? Rules? Not wanting to modify the frame or body to widen the left side of the car? Gary

Josh, so sorry that we could not hook up at Indy this year....no excuses....they are all BS. You belong with our deal along with your Pops! Especially missed you at our Dreyer & Reinbold Racing Indy 500 Party on Friday!

We had an "interesting" race....puncture early, went to last and CHARGED forward with Oriol and a great setup for the heat LATE. Damn, I wish we would have had 5 more laps! 4th is okay, but (like we have heard) it's like getting the tongue from your cousin on graduation...IF she is hot. HA! Still YECH!

I suspect it was more of a 'balance' kinda thing. A lot of the early laydowns were laidover to the inside.

I was rooting for you guys in your CHARGE to the front! I heard a couple reporters on the race mention it.. which made me smile that they were paying attention!

I'll catch up with ya soon enough!

    Mac,

Thanks for posting the link to your blog. I work with Quinn's son and quite often we have conversations concerning "laydown vs. upright". Since I am a "Watson" fan, your comparisons have given more insight and will increase further "discussions".:)

Offy 220, I have a friend who has just completed a tribute/reconstruction Indycar based upon a c.1959 Epperly Chassis and now powered by a twin overhead cam Quad-4.
He purchased the chassis a few years ago from someone local. The story told him was that it was an epperly chassis chopped up for supermodified use and straight six engine. Found in PNW in an abandoned gas station up on a lift.
He hasn't been able to get any more info on the chassis.
If you and Quinn's son are planning to be at the Historic Champ/Indycar Assn 3 day event at California Speedway in 3 weeks his car should be there for its inaugural run.
Please stop by and visit him in -The Something Or Other Special.

All this talk of engine placement, car construction etc. reminds me of a "epiphany" of sorts I had years ago.
Back in the mid 70s they had a series of high dollar open comp races in NorCal-Nevada area, late in the season. While we had no illusions of grandure, as our p.o.s. would be lucky to make the C main, it was a great excuse to have a road trip before winter set in. Anyhoo, we get out there and I get to checking out the cars. Being late in the season and paying good money there was a bunch of back east "hot shots" entered. Every thing from ex-Indy REs, offset supers, roadsters, you name it. Then there was the local cars: uprights with coupe bodies on rectangular tube frames, cross springs, wide fives on floaters, I-beam axles. I mean these cars were just one step removed from the 1950s. So I'm thinking; these crates will fill out the C-B mains while the "real" race cars clean up. Yeah, riiight! Those guys gave the "hot shots" everything they could handle and then some. The moral to the story?- I don't care if the motor is hung out into the next county or upside down on top of the roll cage, he who rubs on his car the most, screws in enough HP and figures how to plant his 4 tires into the track is going to be fast, be it Indy or the local 1/4 mile. JMO.

Picked up a new toy while out in Indy last weekend. Now I just need to build a cart for it. Got the shaft, crank flange and charger with it.

The Johnston-Carbone-Wendt Bonneville Indy roadster is nearing completion in mac miller's Indy garage.

Last Friday, a notable group of Indy roadster owners, restorers and builders came to the mac miller shop to scrutinize the new car before it heads to its new home in Miami Fla.

The distinguished visitors were led by A.J.Watson and included
Bob McConnell, George Lyons, Dave Shleppi, Steve Miller and Bud Taylor.

The "special" will feature Watson bodywork and a 270 Offenhauser engine.

Some lefty-righty's. I think this year will probably be the last time any dirt (gravel actually) will be slung on PP. You also won't see any uprights and the only Unser will be Bobby's daughter in her electric racer.

I think this is what you would call race car porn. A brand new KK3000 sparkling in the summer sun.

Speaking of race car porn, and certainly in the Kurtis vein, I got the Aug 2012 issue of Street Rodder today and pages 144-47 have an article of a Sports racer that was being built by the late Al Barnes of Oregon. Crazy cool, Gary

Portland Oregon 1954, 100 lapper on 1 mi horse track, Len Sutton driving for Rolla Vollstedt (in cowboy hat) having a pre-race chat with starter Pat Vidan. Does anyone have any info on the other car, possibly Del McClure?
