Steve: Is the owner letting you keep all the old parts??

I had a flood of shat like this come through my shop in '79-'82...there was a weekly "Fifties Nite" that sparked a flame in a group of yuppies that suddenly decided they could 'buy-in to this new hobby!

    Kept me busy.

  2. This thread is the reason I scroll through dailey, an interesting build from a talented fabricator. It does get old though watching the thread police and rule nazi's riddle it with there input. Not everything can be fixed by installing a set of steelies and dressing up like the Fonz. Give me the diversity.........

Huh Huh, Huh Huh he said "Shat"... You should see his back room... Or my shop for that matter! Funny thing though, at some point or another I know that Steve will use eveything that is usable that is dropped on his doorstep, just correctly.

I see crap like this in my shop year after year. it amazes me that their are shops building dangerous cars like this. I just repaired one that had a bed frame used for wishbones.

Elpolacko (Steve) did a thread on the build of his table. Do a forum search on Elpolacko and the table build will show up. It is a great learning tool as well. On the threaded holes he used a magnetic base drill. I've learned a lot from Steve and I've been a mechanical engineer for 30+ years and a hot rodder for longer than that.

Just remember when you stop learning, you're dead, either mentally or physically.

Absolute mind blowing design and skill, ELP, thank you very much for posting all of this, these type of technical threads are what I enjoy the most about the H.A.M.B.

Elp, you are doing a great job on this re-build/exorcisim, and you are also doing a great service to the car building hobby, by showing your methods, and solutions to your problems that arrive when doing a project like this. To all the garage fabricators/wannabe car builders...do your do diligence BEFORE , starting your project...read up on different suspensions, and steering & driveline guidelines, even if you are going to farm that part of the job out...that way you will be able to tell when the wool is being pulled over your eyes...and like other major purchases/contracts, get references from former customers....not friends of the potential builder..if you are going to do the heavy work , you don't need the the computer , or the CNC plasma cutter, but you do need basic hand tools and patients . a hole saw will cut the holes, a sawzal/jigsaw will make the cuts , a 5" grinder will dress everything up nice, A BUNCH of poster board for making templates/mock-ups BEFORE cutting in steel/aluminum, and also for making quick suspension movemnt drawings on.and last but not least....TIME, AND THE DESIRE TO DO GOOD WORK....I have seen people do amazing work with very few, and lo quality tools , I have also seen people with a killer shop , turn out turds......Not all craftsmen are created equil.....Thanks again to Elp for sharing his knowlege and time...we are all richer for it....Shawn

I came across this thread this morning (I was actually late for work) and am extremely impressed with your workmanship Mr. ELP. I've just logged in again to see what has transpired, when I stumbled across a couple of fellas "stating facts". Please give me a royal break!!!! Mr ELP, you have created a car fulfilling both form and function from a rolling train wreck. Please don't waste any keyboard time on the "fact police". Please keep the photos coming. I'm certain Mr. Alex X's streamliner was OT back in the day. Thank you again.
To those that are having a little moan, just put the mouse down and turn to the next page and let the rest of us followers enjoy this. Thank you too.

  19. Great thread, I keep waiting for Mike Holmes to jump in with "make it right".

  20. Just had a rambling incoherent conversation with one Mr Tman. Some say his elbows aren't where you expect them to be, but we did concur that one could argue a 1948 Chevy coupe, Pro-Streeted with a 305 and a B&M 144 supercharger and splash gumball graphics could be considered a traditional car........... traditional late 80's.

Shawnspeed of Attica, you are brilliant. The incomparable Needlouvers? and I assembled a car in his carriage house about 1993. The concrete floor was literally put in after the building was erected and leveled with a pushbroom. The tight quarters meant you had to go outside to change your mind, regardless we (I just did the front end) built a very safe car that has withstood several hundred thousand miles of travels, abuse like no car ever should and after an incident with someone making an improper left turn the car has survived almost everything thrown at it.

I put the car on the my table and leveled it out and center-lined it. Everything but the frame horn was still on axis. It only needed a 3/16 it push on the rightside spring pocket and a bit of persuasion to get it back to alignment. Us two knuckleheads only had a Lincoln SP100, chop saw and an angle grinder but somehow we managed to pull this off. The car lives to be driven like a teenager rides a skateboard.

And that's why almost no one can afford to build a rod in Australia, because Mommy government has to look over your shoulder every step of the way.

Honestly, how many people have been killed due to poorly made hobby cars?

You bastard! You just answered Shawnspeed in exactly the same manner I was at the same time only much funnier! (I did get side tracked as they were revewing Durant's on T.V., mmmmnnnnn steaks and martinis and flocked wallpaper served by waiters in tuxes. I've been poor this time long enough!) You did much more than the front end on my car my friend and you know I have and will be eternally grateful. 'Course, I was going to add about setting myself firmly ablaze while cutting out the rear spring pockets, and compliment Shawnspeed on his BSA A65 avatar... But i'm kinda dumb that way.

"The car lives to be driven like a teenager rides a skateboard" is easily the most apt description I have ever read about a car/owner dynamic such as mine, I was simply going to use Pete Eastwood's "Race 'em, wreck 'em, and never check 'em" wheez...

Steve is at the top of the heap on chassis/suspension building . . .

    One of the Hamb's real treasures . . .

Post any goddamn thing you want, sir, it is pure gold.

What a perfect thread. Love, hate - Laughter, crying - Controversy, agreement - Superiority, inferiority - Life at its best!

ElP seems to be a gifted man in his field who has a great sense of what give and take is.
He doesn't seem to sweat the small stuff.

The price of this evolving hot rod is probably known by a few individuals. But I will give my OPINION on what the totals MIGHT be.

    1. Total out the door price of original car $17,000.00
    2. Price of front clip before total frame rebuild $4500.00
    3. Price of total frame construction $8500.00
    4. Total price of both constructions $30,000 to $35,000

Am I in the ball park? Will legal action ensue with original builder?

    Tune in tomorrow! ;)

  27. A car "exorcism" describes this Frankenstein's monster - turned - Queen of the ball perfectly. Like I said earlier, I wish I had just a tiny bit of the talent that Steve has displayed in this build. This thread is the absolute PERFECT thread to show fans of those "r__r__" abortions WHY they generally suck, and why they should never see a road under their own power.

  28. Thanks for saving this one.

I know there are rat rodders who read the hamb. I've encountered some out there in the flesh. I try to understand them...why they do what they do. So far I've concluded this:

    1) They don't know how to build a car right so they just cobble it together with whatever crap they have lying around.

    2) They do not have the money required to build a proper hot rod (I sympathize with that but you don't see me tackling a project on my tiny budget).

    3) They are misinformed about what makes a car attractive/valueable/cool (Had quite a debate with a gentleman at a car auction a few months back about this....what an idiot)

    4) They have a juvenile desire to drive a total POS down the road. It's like a contest to see who has the most f-d up car that is still capable of propelling itself.

    5) They want to thumb their nose at hot rodders & street rodders. This one doesn't bother me because at the heart of it is...envy.

    Quit the Drama.

    Please...

If not, things are going to get ugly from here on out.

  30. Wow, a bunch of proverbial shit, and a big old proverbial fan eh?:D

I see the plans have changed a bit since I got to lay my eyeballs on this menagerie. First off, you are obviously a better man than I, Steve. I would've started this whole thread with a full screen photo of those clowns at Hodgepodge McRattlecans Speedshop and Horseshit Emporium, and their awesome pose striking. At least when their shop fails, they know how to "vogue", and can get a job working at an Ed Hardy outlet store. Glad to see that you ended up doing the entire frame instead of just adding your piece to the front. Would have been like putting a tube top on a pig.

There were so many magical pieces on this car, it's hard to pick a favorite. I was pretty partial to the straight outta Summit mandrel bent driveline hoop, and the expanded steel tunnel, but, it's hard to not love that sweet ass copper upper radiator setup with sweated joints. That just made my face twitch uncontrollably. That could have been a thread all on its' own.
