This must depend on where you come from. My observation comes from old photos & hazy memories of fifties 'do-ups' that were still on the roads when I was a kid in the sixties. And this is Australia, so switch off now..

For those still with me, the general trend here in the fifties was to add stuff to cars. The period after the WW2 was prosperous, and exploding car ownership rates went hand -in-hand with a joyful sense of wonder in material wealth such as a generation had never seen or sensed.
Things like reflectors, baubles, horns, mudflaps, chrome gee- gaws were produced by dozens of enteprenurial ex- servicemen, and they were bought & slapped on with gusto!
The 'clean 'em up' thing is a more recent phenomenon down here.

Everyone likes what they like. I like this, as it's what I'm building in the garage.

 

Spoggie, I agree there were certainly many, many cars done up this way, however I look upon these cars as over-accesoried stockers and not traditional customs.

Hey man, I hope I didn't come across as disrespecting your car. I just don't think a swamp cooler is nice to look at is all. Hell I'm all for bolting crap on (I run dummy lakes and dummy spots myself). I apologise if you took that as a personal insult.
By the way, was that your car that I saw at the "Lawdy Momma" show in battles bridge last weekend?

This is the Ultimate! Stylistically, the Hirohhata Merc and the Golden Sahara rolled up in one!

The trim package is the zenith Detroit opulence. The sheet metal is contoured to the beautiful side trim. And check that rear window!

This car is nearly stock to the door handles, but as custom as it gets, right from the factory.Bravo!

No proof needed, talented guys have been turning out Kustom trucks since the 50s. There were loads of them back in the day.
