Looks like the door will still swing open judging by the size of the hole around the header tube.

Indeed. As tempting as it is to open it, I need a virus like I need another hole in my head.

Here it is again. I thought it was a jpeg to begin with.

Anyone ID the 82 car in the near lane?

Car #82 is the Beebe Bros & Sixt Car but after the car received it's RCS front half. John Mulligan is in the seat for this run. later half of 1967.

Car in the other lane at OCIR is Tony Waters, perhaps with Mike Sorokin driving.

Pretty sure this is the car Mike lost his life in.

That makes sense. I noticed it has the extra tubing at the front of the rollcage just as the later green striped Beebe and Mulligan car and wondered if there was a connection. Thanks!

Your probably right. Sorokin lost his life at OCIR and I believe it was in 67.

This photo is kinda ironic as both great drivers would eventually lose there life in a rail.

And it was clutch failure their took their lives. The advent of the slipper clutch significantly increased clutch explosions.

John Mulligan survived his burns for a while. AJ Foyt offered his private plane to send him to any hospital he wanted to go to, but the family declined. If his hospital was more educated about the dangers of infections in burn victims, he very easily would have survived. What killed him was given to him at the hospital.

    My understanding, anyway.

Mike's injuries were not survivable. I think the clutch sawed the car in half and additionally the rear end spun in the car, which is probably fatal in the front engine cars of the era.

Historically correct additional info is welcome. I want to be correct in history and not regurgitate incorrectness. I've been into this since 1964, mostly via magazines as a kid, and I find it irksome when modern writers gets their facts wrong, and they all do it all the time.

I recall some drag movie from the 70's where Ed Pink describes John's accident in every grisly detail. Made it sound like a blowtorch right in the face. Poor John. There's also a touching pic of John BS'ing with Tommy Ivo in the staging lanes possibly minutes prior to their match up. (I think it was qualifying and Tom was in the other lane?)
