Folks Of Interest Old time Hot Rodder follows me home

I went to the store this morning, in the coupe. As i pulled into the garage , a car was pulling up behind me. Anyway it turns out this 90 year old man, Dick Reis, had a 32 Roadster, B block, all hopped up. Told me he used to race on Venice Blvd, had raced Vic Edlebrock a few times amoung others. I encouraged him to go home and write out his history and see if he had any pictures left. Hope he does, i will post if he comes through.

But better yet....the next time you see the guy, ask if you can treat him to lunch, have him bring old photos if he has them.

Then bring your video camera, or at least record his voice and have him tell stories. There's still a few of those WW2 era guys running around that started hotrodding and it's up to us to coax that history out of them while they're still here.

My grandfather was too old for WW2, but he was still hopping up Model T's back in the day. I wish I had documented better some of the stories he told me about all that.

Ok.........LOL.........its no secret i will be 70 this year, and have been Hot Rodding for over 50 plus years...however this guy is ready to check out{90} and raced on Venice Blvd in LA,,,,,,i am sure he's got cool story's{better than mine}

Where did they used to race on venice blvd?

I grew up in the area and have talked to old timers etc, but never heard that was an old racing spot..

I have no idea, just repeating what he told me, i realized right away the way he described his engine and whatnot that he was for real and knew alot. I just got his ph# and address so i am going to try and set up a meet and story session. He lives very close to me.

 

That video or voice recorder is a great idea. It falls in step with the Smithsonian project to record and video your Father and Grandfather and Great-Grandfather stories about the wars(WWII, Korea, Viet Nam) and the home front, car stories are all a part of the visual and oral history of our people.

 

Great story, wish I had a chance now to record all the old timers who hung out at Blair's, or worked there, ....not many guys who can say they raced Vic Edelbrock...

 

Told me flat out he raced him twice.....said his 4 banger was fast. I dont remember what all he told me about the engine but its enough to make me a believer

 

ok.........I just called him, he wasnt home, left message to set appt to sit down and hear his story.........
