People with no mechanical skills buying old cars

    I frequent alot of car forums and there have been many times I have read that every time something goes wrong they have to take it to a mechanic to get it repaired,I know I cant do everything like front end alignments,auto trans rebuilds and setting up rear ends but I can do everything else but I am having a hard time imagining someone wanting a old car but has no mechanical abilities at all. I know there are a bunch out there in the world that has more money then brains who can afford to pay to have everything done but I cant see average folks being able to afford to have every repair done by a mechanic on a old car they just bought,if I had to pay someone to get every old car I drug out of a field drivable I would be in debt as deep as this country is in so what I am I missing here.

    What got me wondering about this subject is I am on the AACA forum and there is a guy that has a 37 Pontiac that has to take it to someone every time something goes wrong and is having a hard time finding anyone who can repair it correctly,I wish I lived close by so I could stop by and see if I can help but I am thinking about posting that he should probably sell it and if he wants a old car buy one that is a little newer so he could get it fixed easier. If I dont know about something I usually dont mess with it since I know I will be spending too much money and have too many headaches trying to deal with it.

    I didn't know jack about cars when I got my first old car ( 49 chevy pu ) but I was 13 . If I hadn't got that truck I might not have ever learned anything about anythihg mechanical .. I might have ended up bing a sports guy.... Thank God for old cars!

    For that matter, most people that own ANY model year car don't know how to perform any type of repair.
    Millions of people own homes but don't know (or care to know) the first thing about maintenance or repairs. If the toilet backs up; "I don't care if it costs $300, just fix it"!

    I would never ask a customer what he makes in a year at whatever he does, but having a high paying job for the most part doesn't require them to know how to tie their shoes. i'm glad they know their limits and take the cars to shops. Why do so many TV shows feature hard working people with mechanical skills, but never one on desk jockies pushing papers and pulling in 6 figure saleries PLUS the Christmas bonus? NO envy, just wondering? Bob:rolleyes:

without help. But for all the mechanics that help these kids out... stick out your hand and take their money.

    A sisters friend was probably the most successful record producer of the late 80's early 90's. I used to hang with them once in a while. One night he was having a party and I was invited. He was short on ice and asked me if i wanted to go for a ride. While driving he played me some stuff he was working on with big artists. later that night he told me he wished he could do what I could do, houses, cars, just good abilities. I told him I wish I could do what he does then I could have twenty shops building me bad ass cars and not worrying about money.

    Tehy are all good people, just different abilities. Two cars i have in my shop right now, one is a lawyer and one is a guy who repairs hi tech imaging equipment in hospitals. Everyone has their abilities

    How is that statement anti hot rod,I would love to have a 30s or 40s wooden boat but I am not a carpenter nor do I have the cash to buy one finished (not going in debt to buy one either) so I know my limits and will stick with the fiberglass and aluminum versions.

    My kids always give me shit when I ask for help with my computer or smartphone...I ask them if they can weld....or paint a car...or build a engine...I'm honered to teach them...like my dad did for me...:)

    I do both. Software engineer by day, wrenching and welding on weekends. Lots I don't know but I'm learning as I go. And, most important, I'm having a blast. :cool:

    Of course, having common sense and knowing your limits helps too. ;)

    A renaissance man! I know there are gearheads of all walks of life. That's what makes hot rodding the great American melting pot that it has always been.

    On an off-topic note, what cartoon is your avatar from, dmikulec? I remember the opening sequence of it so well, but cannot remember the title! Some kind of early-seventies monster rock band kinda' thing, right?
