    The dealership was selling the new 58 Desoto and Plymouth lines. The car under the sign at the right of the photo is a 56 Chevy (used car)
    The dealership location is now a BMW repair and sales shop and the used car lot that was across the street is now a Taco Bell

    I just did a little more research on the subject and found that the event was in response to the 1958 recession.
    "All Night Sale-- In an effort to overcome declining auto sales, one of the hardest hit sectors of the slump, the Beyer DeSoto dealership of St. Louis put its salesmen on duty for 64 hours straight, as part of a sell-a-thon that raised sales 73%."

    The sad REALITY for DeSoto was that -- after the successes of '55 through '57, which should have put the company on top of the world -- the recession coupled with rushed-up quality issues from the '57 models to DOOM the make. DeSoto had bumped up quality control for the '58 models, but they sadly LOST the Hemi that had helped brand it, unoffically, as "The Working Man's Hotrod." So, with the '58 recession on, Dodge pushed upward for market share, Chrysler (with nowhere to go UPward because of the new Imperial line) pushed DOWNward for market share.

    The now-popular Exner finned DeS represented the last gasp of a long-serving, loyal MoPar line. DeSoto was invented to plug a market gap in 1928. DeSoto was phased out because Dodge and Chrysler left no such gap as the recession settled in. It surely wasn't Wolson's, or anybody's, fault. Chrysler didn't need DeSoto anymore.

    Even the '60 and abbreviated '61 DeSotos were, indeed, fine cars. But they were built on Dodge lines and largely of Dodge and Chrysler parts. Sadly, after Nov. 15, 1960, DeSotos became a sales drag-on-the-market, just like used Packards, Edsels, Kaiser/Frazers and Hudsons. What an awful time when we look back now and realize how many great cars were just sold off CHEAPLY and simply used up, instead of being well maintained (for the most part anyway). Mart mentioned something to this effect early this week, concerning a similar wave, due to the great depression. Mart! What were some of those GRAND marques from THAT great age?

    But, as bad as the '58 recession's persistent impacts were, I still think DeSoto had a more honorable end than the preemptory way Ford was forced to handle their '60 Edsels.

    Have enjoyed this since the beginning without contributing, so, here goes.

    *Rear 3/4 view is probably Hattiesburg, MS.
    *Main plant of Barq's in Biloxi MS after 1934. The building was a Ford dealership up to 1934.
    *Pool Room-I just acquired a sign like this-10 ft. tall!
    *Biloxi MS Mardi Gras.
    *Biloxi MS parade.
    * Big Springs TX

    I know i'm one of the few lady members here on the HAMB but cant we find some better pictures besides scantily clad women? I'm all for the historic movie/actress stars, etc but I feel like some of these pics just dont belong in this thread and its becoming a habit page by page.
