Features Model A Ford Coupe & Roadster Rear Rollpan Build

Personally I think the Model A coupe Body is one of the simplest, cleanest body's out there. The one thing that always has bothered me is the lack of a roll pan between the rear fenders. I was looking for ideas to shoot for when I build one here soon. Id like it to roll down about 6 or 7 inches to hide what is visible from the rear. Any Ideas, pics of what you've built, or even drawings?

I was thinking about how much I would like one for my 28 the only one I can seem to fine is for a 32 but its like $900 on flea-bay. I wondered if a late 30's pickup cab roof would make a quick roll pan since I don't have the metal working skills to creat one. Now where to find a roof. Please Post up more photos

 

They're really not that hard to make.

 

No they really are not hard to build they just take a lot of time to build.. I started this one yesterday afternoon. I wanted to do something that looked like it could be stock to the untrained eye so I am reversing the bead line like the one panel above. Now the hard part knocking out two ends that look the same. lol

 

Old time method was to cut up a couple of headlight shells for the corners and roll the center
sheet metal around your oxygen tank, weld the pieces together and either weld or bolt it on. There were how-to articles in the old magazines.

 

Anyone else have a how to or tech on building one of these pans?

 

Ive never built one but I'm giving it a go here... I just air hammered out one of the ends. Still rough but coming in pretty close.

Thanks, I have some home built tools that work pretty darn well and I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night! And to be honest a beer to smooth things out on this beautiful warm Saturday afternoon doesn't hurt either.

Making the second one to match in the opposite direction is always an adventure.

Thanks guys for the props! I haven't had any free time to work on any of my stuff for awhile hence the roll pan. Ive never made one for a fendered A before and needed to play today. LOL I still need to attach the end caps and weld the mounting plates into the top of the end caps. Its growing on me and I like the uniqueness of it.

 

Nice work, and I agree an A definitely benefits with a roll pan added.

 

That's very nice work right there, don't think I've seen one with body lines carried through it. That will look great when you're done.

 

put a chrome jag rear end in it and you won't mind the space! it's the perfect body style to show one off!

 

I definetly completes the look of the back.

 

I agree. Hope to finish the basic stuff today and get it installed.

 

COOOORAP! I didnt notice it till I took it off to paint it but the Top body/ joggle line is growing slightly wider on the passenger side of the roll pan. It grew about a quarter of an inch... I dont know how I missed it yesterday? Maybe it was that awesome tasting brew. Its junk and and I cant use it! I will try again next weekend.
Anyway I learned a little and think I can knock it out faster next week, and more importantly get it right.

My helper was even bummed out!

Add frame horns and spreader bar or pan. Will have a deuce coupe look.

 

Thanks for your patients Jim... Dont know what has happened but the seat business has just exploded and I'm a little behind right now. Must be tax returns? Once I get squared away with the seat guys I will knock it out and get it to ya. Thanks again.
