Gasser pickups

How common were gasser pickups back in the day? Anybody have pics of them?

I saw '58 Ford PU gasser in the Divas of Viva thread and it got me thinking...

It's got me looking at mine kinda funny now with it's wretched straight axle, and the fact that I have a fresh Pontiac 455 on the stand, a spare tunnel ram, a spare Muncie 4 speed, etc

 

They weren't popular at all.I remember the Willys,a handful of Thames.Gassers were mostly sedans and coupes.Hardwall slicks didn't have much traction.The fullbodied cars had better weight transfer.58 Ford pickups were good tow vehicles.

 

Gasser pickups were very popular back in the 60's, here are two of my favorites!

This is my project truck. I've been building since September. The body came off my truck that I've had since I was 19 (31 years in a garage). Found a chassis last year, boxed it, added a 10bolt 8.5 out of a Nova and some S-10 rear springs, a 327 I had from way back with 461 heads, old TRW pop-ups, Solid lifter LT-1 cam, balanced, etc. Speedway axle. Superior Glass fenders and boards.

Since the wife will be driving it a TH350 was added but with a stall and shift kit. Also added radials for the same reason. Not 100% what was run back in the day, but close enough for me, and a neat street runner..

Long way from being done, still need to wire, paint, bodywork, etc, but will drive the wheels off of it once it is.

If I had a scanner I have a 56 hot rod magazine with coverage of the Nhra Kansas top speed trials that has a 46 stude pickup with a 55 stude mill in it. It's just a small photo and caption that says d/gas 46 stude with 55 stude motor won his class...
