I don't recall seeing them, but what about 39 Mercury?

I was visiting some friends at a restoration shop and there was this sweet 39 Merc getting finished up, and I realized I have never ever seen these lights that I can recall.

Since that shop is out at the old Reynolds auto collection parts yard out in Wetaskiwin Alberta, those tail lights could be off anything.

From some angles they look very odd, I have seen them myself in person on the car and didn't like them.

I can't identify them myself but old Reynolds had a lot of old cars and trucks out there at one time.

They are different, not sure what they are. It has sure taken them a long time to put that car together.

Well, there you go :) Still didn't like them. Maybe thats why guys commonly replaced them with something else.

This car and it's lights aren't from the Reynolds yard, I've never actually seen this car there before, but I like it and I like the tail lights, possibly because they aren't the same old same old I normally see like 39 Ford and 41 Chev.

I think they would be cool on the back fenders of a truck.

Chryslers on my coupe. I was gonna drop these and do a bunch of molding to the tail and use 58 chevy, but I've gone away from that idea. I think I'm gonna leave as is..should look good when the car is done at the end of this summer!

  14. Absolutely, those are original '39 Mercury tail lights. They ARE odd, weird, one-of-a-kind, lots of adjectives apply here. I am every bit as interested in the view of any car from the rear as the front - as such, tail lights can grab my attention. This was a one year only application, and I'd bet that these lights weren't very popular. The 1940 tail lights were much more conventional. But, these were pretty innovative and distinctive, and had a safety factor as well. I guess Bob Gregorie and his group of stylists weren't afraid to think outside the box in the late 1930s.

Personally, I think they are as much a wart on these cars as I've ever seen. No way could that have been planned all along. The whole rest of a '39 Merc just looks like it belongs together.

Have an old friend with a 39 Mercury convertible and 39 4-door with those same original ugly lights. My 41 Ford tail lights are also a one year only, if you don't count panel trucks for many years using them.

J James started this thread long ago. This was his suggestion.

Try to include the year of tail light and the car that you put them on in case it's not clear. Also if there are any changes to them let us know that too.
Not many are doing this and he didn't either !

  22. Didn't the Ford & Mercury Sportsman convertibles of 1946-48 use those same tail lights?

  23. They sound great, wonderful audio system there :)

Race cars had tail lights (who wanted to mess with adding lights when flat towing)... A friend took these lights off an old bus... I notched them for the frame and Carey added a skirt to the inside to blend in...

Found these ('51.. right?) Hudson taillights at the swap meet last weekend. I thought I'd stash them and save them for a later project then realized that I had been doing a lot of researching and trying to find a pair of taillights that are different. These would fit the bill. Well, different on a Model A, anyways. I won't be getting to this point anytime soon but once I turn my attention back to the body full-time, I'm thinking I'll cut the metal down to where the trim itself is flat and 1/2" or so around, lose the emblem on top, mount them sideways on both sides of the license plate so they point out. I'm not ready to dive into cutting them just yet..

Anyone ever seen '51 Hudson taillights on an A?

Yea. small plane...they just fit perfectly into the stainless 39 surround.
I really like 46-48 ford or 39's....I am boring.
