It depends on the weight of the car and the viability of 6 or 8 cyl alternatives.

Case in point that I've been considering the small Nash Ramblers. They weigh in at around 2500 lbs or less, and came with a flat head 6 that put out around 90 hp and 150 ft lb torque. There is little to no performance equipment available. The engine bay on them is so short and narrow that putting a more modern 6 or 8 cyl in them requires major cutting. The AMC/Jeep 2.5 4 output was 105-130 hp and 132-150 ft lb torque...and comes with the possibility of a modern transmission and the availability of performance equipment. If the swap is possible it would give 15-30 more hp immediately, with the possibility of more down the road, and a more efficient tranny to make use of what power is available. <SHRUG>

i agree, if the truck was light, 4cyl would be a good choice. with the heavier truck, a fuel infected 300 cu.in. 6 w/dual exhaust and medium sized cam would provide the torque you need. best of luck for whatever choice you make...jack

I like the idea of keeping a 4 cylinder engine in a car that came with one.

I am putting Mercury Marine 4 cylinder engines in my Model A Fords and in my 1965 544 Volvo.

They will sound and look right and will perform very well.

The Chevrolet based 2.5 and 3.0 Mercruiser 4 cylinder put out 120 to 140 hp and will make a 2300 lb car Freeway safe.

The 460 Ford big block based aluminum 4 cylinder can easily put out 190 to 225 hp and weighs about 300 lbs dressed. They will make a 2300lb car scream.

Turbocharged the big block 3.7 liter Mercruiser will pump out over 300 hp and 300 ft/lb of torque in a mild state of tune.

The 4.36" bore and 3.75" stroke together with the QuadraJet 4 barrel carb make for good torque.

The aluminum block weighs 75 lbs. The intake valves are 2.19" with 1.75" exhaust with a low cost aftermarket 460 Ford aluminum head and these engines have produced 500 hp with more sophisticated aluminum heads.

YOU'VE PROBABLY SEEN THIS YouTube 29 MODEL A BUT HERE IT IS AGAIN FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T.

Yeah I would, and I would lay it over a little and put another one on the other side and lay it the other way. Oh and connect them with a common crank.

I would. And we have. I've posted this before but I feel the need to defend the Ecotec. Here is a Dyno run of our roadster. It holds the G/BFR and G/BGR records at Bonneville, with a best of over 212mph. Makes about 950 hp. We drove the car over 700 miles from Pomona to the Salt Flats and went 207mph on the first pass. Just my opinion but I'll take those numbers.

I think as you read the comments there will always be division in what people feel you should and shouldn't do. Most guys are into speed and power although a big trend right now is the unusual.. that would be unusual.. I say go for it.. worst case you're not happy with it and you put something else in there.. What the heck? I'm doing something with one of my rides that is kind of similar to what you're doing here.. the purists will hate it, the others will be split. I'm doing it for me.. want to see how it goes.. if I'm not happy with it.. I'll swap it out and save that motor for something else. Go for it if you want to.

In a mid-'50's pick-up, nope, not even just to be different.

But, since others have brought up Pinto OHC's, Quad 4's, Ecotec's, Zetec's, Yamahas, etc., yeah maybe a kickin' little high-output four banger w/ a T-5 in a two-seat modified ( with a full hood kept shut, of course )!

So, anyone know where I can get a rear-wheel-drive bellhousing to fit a T-5 onto a 10:1 comp ratio SCCA Solo II race prepped 1.8L water-cooled Rabbit GTI engine? :D

    Later, Kinky6

I have a 2.5 AMC in my 29 Pk Up, because I got it free and came with a 5sp. Runs well but its not very heavy, and down here you build with what you got. You need a V8, even the 6s were not up to what I would run, even though they ran well. Just like a V8 in a truck.

Fox tbirds have literally no drag coefficient to allow them to go faster with less hp-to-weight. Fairlanes, not so much. I've pondered it, too.

For those of us with multiple rides, a 4cyl. might not be a bad idea for a daily driver. I've considered using an ACME adapter to mount a VW TDi and 5sp. in an old car. 40mpg is not a bad thing, lol.... make up for the big V8 draining my wallet.
