sorry about digging up an old thread but damn this wagon is awesome. Like everything about it from the updated running gear to the awesome job preserving the outside.

Im interested to hear more about this CLR technique? It looks to have come up unreal after that wash. Is it something that you really need to scrub with the scotch bright or have you got to go steady not to damage the paint any more etc?

Im keen to do the same thing to my 61 falcon because the paint is similar

Can I state an opinion that has nothing to do with the wheels? How about a little of that gold paint you used on the engine on your billet pedals in the recesses?

I typically use M&H wiring out of California, but when I was building her M&H was on back order, so I went with American Autowire and I will have to say they are fantastic as well for factory reproduction. They even upgraded my engine harness for 12v key power for my MSD R2R.

I bought a 1964 Chevrolet Impala Wagon, just for that seat! My 61 was originally a 6 passenger, factory ac, green glass, 283/2bbl, power steering, power brake, and power back glass car.

Brad, its rather simple, just adding some hot tap water to a 5 gal wash bucket and a few shots of CLR will do. A brandnew 3M scothbrite pad and wash up your project, you do not have to be vigorous with this process. Just act as if you were washing a normal paintjob. It will work, and before your eyes something special will be revealed!

Beautiful car. I love it. I just aquired a 61 sport sedan, full power,AC, 283 4brl/ PG car. You have givin me so many idea and inspiration for it.

I have a few questions for you, if you don't mind.

This is my first X frame car. Are they real prone to bending the front crossmeber? I've heard a few story and haven't got an answer from other people.

Did you build you own bag setup or buy a kit? If it was a kit, where did you get it?

They are not prone to bending (x-member) unless you run 80 mile an hour over a manhole cover with the car about 2" off the ground.

I piece all of my air ride setups, never buy kits, but that is just me.

 

So, here I was brainstorming, never having backup lamps on the wagon became a concern for me recently. Not wanting to convert and lose my two tailights in the tailgate by using a NOS 1961 Station Wagon Chevrolet backup kit, I purchased an awesome NOS 1958 Chevrolet Station Wagon only kit for just over $100. These have chrome housings and real tempered glass lenses, super rare and were installed on the rear license panel on a 58 wagon, so I just used the idea on my 61 and it worked out badass!

They are super bright at night, I was shocked on how much illumination they cast, but its use is primarily for others to know that I am backing up. These certainly do serve a better job than a stock 61 backup tail lamp.

Actually, I did a good deed and donated the old 283 to a local Vocational School for some kids to gain some experience on engine rebuilding.

 

Great thread. Was searching for info on how to best perserve the patina on my 50 Merc,but ended up reading the entire thread. Gonna try the CLR and Scotchbrite pad method for sure.

Also, got some good ideas about how to make my SBC look right in my 34 Ford 5w Coupe. Really like the gold paint.
