My friend Hugh in Montana sent me this today...while not the happiest subject, this 1-minute movie of the tragic last run of the great Frank Lockhart is quite mesmerizing, especially the shots from the airplane that cannot hopelessly have a chance to keep up with Lockhart's dual-Miller-engined Stutz.

Most of this footage has been seen elsewhere, but parts of this footage seems newly unearthed to my eyes, especially the aftermath footage.

Dad knew Stan before his USAC days and was also very good freinds with both Roy Robbins and Pat O'Connor who he named me after. Pat was killed in 58 I was born in 59. Roy, Stan and Pat would come to my dad's shop and visit. Butch Wilkerson would also stop by from time to time. I think Roy's last ride was helping my dad sort out a new Edmonds sprinter that my dad had in the late 60's early 70's. I was told that Pat's first ever win was at the wheel of a roadster that my great uncle Webb Smith owned at the Columbus, IN fairgrounds track. I have a picture of him in that car but its not very good.

We use 3/4 sign board caleed "Dura-Ply" It is very dense, Almost NO air gaps and has a thin layer of PAPER on both sides that makes it a joy to work with. It's not cheap though..

Or....could it be Damn Mason Tires ?!?!? Lockhart put Mason tires on at the last possible minute as part of a sponsorship deal and from my understanding Mason Tires had zero high-speed testing, experience nor ratings.

Almost all comercial airliners built in the last 20 years have some or all controls electronicly controled if not computer controlled including the throttle. These systems are fool-proof & dont fail. So why worry about an automobile having a problem?

 

Biplanes aren't the only ones being passed by LSR cars. Years ago, when I was flying for the airlines, we had one leg of a flight, on a Federal Airway, between Reno and Salt Lake, that took us right over the course on the Bonnevile Salt Flats. There was more than once, cruising at about 270 knots (about 300 mph), that we were passed by a faster, groundbound vehicle.

 

Can you say Toyota?

Does anyone have a photo of Stan Bowman in the Gutzweiler 19? I have the car and would like to get a photo of Bowman in it. Aiiached is a photo of it at Salem in 1962

 

This might be the wrong place to ask, but are there any midget / sprint car fans in the NE who have seen the vintage race car (sounds like a banger) used by "The Wolfman" character actor to chase the trains at Clarks Trading Post and White Mountain Central RR in Lincoln, NH?

I just saw a short video of the Wolfman Special speeding thru the woods chasing the train. Evidently, the folks at Clarks prefer him over the more cliche' train robber entertainment you often see at these kinds of amusement parks.

Still, the car looks pretty cool and sure looks like an old race car. I'd very much like to get some good still pix of it, if they are out there. Links below,

That was a great article about Stan Bowman, I always wanted to know the whole story. I had only heard some of the story from Diane Beck, he was a very talented driver who had a great future. It is always sad when a driver looses his life but that was racing back in the day. The drivers during that period were the bravest of them all.

I asked the folks at Clarks for some pix of the Wolfman Special, and of the two this is the best. I asked for more... who knows if they can provide them. It's a little Rat-racer-ish, but I'm really more interested in if it was an actual race car, mfg. details, etc. Has anyone else ever visited Clark's and taken photos? Gary

It's been a few years since I was at Clarks' Trading Post but I seem to remember the wolfman has a Chevy II int he car. He scares the little kids on the train as he rides up an fires his gun. I have to look and see if I have pictures of the car. Maybe the wolfman will bring his car to vintage show at Loudon in May.

Thank you. Stan is going to be honored at Eldora Speedway at a USAC Sprint show next month on April 21,2012. It will 50 years ( 4-22-62 ) since he won his first official USAC race, in his first oficial USAC race, at the first USAC Sprint car race at Eldora. It was also Harold Beck's first win as a USAC owner...a lot of firsts that day.

 

I am attaching two pictures. One is Bowman in the 19 car taken either at New Bremen Speedway or Terra Haute. He only drove this car twice and had the accident at Terra Haute. I'm also enclosing a picture of the car itself taken by Ken Coles. Can you tell me what the color scheme of the car is and what condition it's in today. I'm just curious! Thanks for posting your picture, it's good to know that the car is still in existance. I was at Salem in 62 as an 11 year old kid with my Dad who was a friend of Stan.
