    Hi there,
    I built the copper T with a 914 engine.
I am driving it in the pics. Sold it to a guy in England about six years ago.
Plans for the frame and a build-up was published in Rod & Custom

I seee that no one has posted the ROD&CUSTOM chassis drawings from the sixties. i have that issue here, but I won't have time to deal finding and scanning it until after Good Guy's this weekend. If this stays at the top, I'll get to it as quickly as possible.

Kermit, what you might want is the Rod & Custom February 1968 issue. Kent Fuller's Porsche- Powered VRod is on the cover. There is a copy for sale on E--- now. Item#400208623582.

That's only one side of the plan sheet. It doesn't show the chassis dimesions on that page. I'll dig up my copy as soon as I have some time. The four or five pages of text would be very helpfull as well.

On the T-bucket forum, a guy by the name of: Dubshack1, Dec 25,'08, thread - New Guy from FL; says he obtained the rights to Speedways' VWT, & can build/sell w/o problem.

I asked him about that, but got no further response.

    You might have better luck.

I do like these things, wanted one since I heard about them in ~67, & could not care less about the "haters". :D . It's on my build list.

i built one of these back in '76. i was getting tired of building vw trikes and figured it would be cool, and i was starting to get interested in street cars/rods. mine was an overgrown gokart. very fast and nimble. it weighed 1200 lbs. i built the frame like a v8 T. 2x3 tube. cut the torsion tube off on the ends and welded what was left to the tubing. boxed all around and it was very strong. mine got about 40 mpg and i used the stock vw tank. here are some build pics.

this last one was a T i saw at a tire place up the street from my house. i ran home and got my camera. i must have looked like some kind of smuck tourist.

this is a sketch of a closed cab VWT i am thinking about building. it would be an all weather car. the doors would have to be widened to get in.

no i don't have any better pics. it is really simple. it's the stock vw trans and torsion bar housing. just like you would cut it out of the bug. the frame is just a regular t bucket type frame. i pulled out the torsion bars and cut the tubing off to where it would fit between the frame rails and welded it up. easy peasy. i had a hard time getting the coilovers to keep the tire flat so i eventually welded a plate under the trans on the arms that hold the trans on and bolted on a model a front spring and welded the skackles on the axle tubes. worked perfectly. if you get all the pieces you will see how simple it is. here is a sketch of it.

after calling speedway for five years about the volksrod i finally got to talk yo ol' bill himself and he told me that they were not going to sell them because some states require front brakes and the volksrod did not originally have them and speedway did not plan on going in that direction as far as kit cars were concerned.
