Who has installed air shocks in their '55-'56 Fords? I need part numbers what did you guys use?

I bought a set from Kanters for my 62 Mercury

 

65-73 Mustang rear shocks.

 

I had gabriel's on mine. Im sure I spelt it wrong haha. I got them ateither napa or kragen.

Honestly if I can remember...They are oretty universal. Just take an old ahock in with you.

 

if you cant find a listing for yours, just know how it mounts on both ends and travel length and any good parts house can find what you need. i put some on my 53 wagon and i just did it like i told you.(had to look it up myself tho lol)

 

Yeah I cant remember if my 56 hade a bolt "eye" at one end and threaded at the other? or threaded on both ends. Because my uncles 56 merc was the opposite haha

 

I bought all 4 NORS shocks including rear air shocks for cheap money a few years ago for my 56 on Ebay. I have not seen the same offer lately though.

 

I saw what tommy was talking about on ebay years ago. I just didnt want to deal with shipping and somebody possibly sending me the wrong parts.

 

Thanks guys! When I start my rear suspension I will take one of the old shocks out and bring it into the parts store with me to match it up!

Yes gabriel shocks are good.

 

I just went out and looked. No name but 729701 is stamped into the body. They are probably generic shocks made by a large company but sold to others for resale.

They have the threaded studs both top and bottom. This is for a sedan and not a SW. I know that SW and Ranchero's used a different shock from a sedan in 57.

Google tells me that that is a Gabriel air shock number.

I can't speak for them because my car is still on jack stands but it sure seems like a good price to me. I was getting about a 100 bucks just for air shocks in the 90s.

I would also need a compressor and a switch of some sort for under my dash right? Where would I get these?

well these are usually manual. Just hook up the compressor and air up to where you need it to be.

They come with the complete tubing kit. I mounted the schrader valve under the gas flap. El Caminos came from the factory them with the valve behind the pass seat under the rear glass. That was when every gas station had a free air pump. I got mine so that I could adjust the ride height up a tad to a slightly more aggressive stance. Not sky high but not but not 50 years of sagging either.

These were made as temporary adjustable helper springs for heavy loads that you could let the air back out after it was unloaded. In the 70s they were abused by kids that jacked them up to the sky just to get those L60 Polyglass tires on the rear. Check out the current thread on the 70s.

They were called Hyjackers not Low riders. 2 different concepts.

 

Got this from Y Block Forever website.

"Monroe Max-Air air shocks #MA739 will fit '55 & '56 passenger cars rear axle. Slight trimming of the rubber biscuits may be necessary in order to get the upper shock nut started. Work like a top; just enough lift to keep my rear tires from scrubbing the inner fender. Not a bad looking "air rake" either."

Should I order these ones through Autozone? How much would they be? It seems like this atleast comes with everything except the compressor and switch? I live in Canada so we DON'T have an Autozone I could maybe order them though? Thanks!

The ones on eBay come with all that? Reason I want them is I am planning to have my car REALLY LOW also I do A LOT of driving and will have luggage to carry. I think these will help.
