I had that stink in my tool box once, and it turned out to be the free rust preventer tabs that some tool company gave me. They are cardboard and have a little red dot on the squares. your supposed to put a square in each drawer and it is supposed to absorb any moisture...after about 3 months it smells like a cat hoarder has moved in... My screwdrivers don't currently smell bad, but I will know if the smell comes back where it is!

Off Topic, but the Vanilla trick also works great in coolers and ice chests.

Quit usin' WD40 to clean your tools. It goes all rotten garbage smell, I've heard a rumour that it has fish oil in it.

  6. Yep it's the tools. I have a couple of drawers that smell too.

Heloise says dip your old plastic handled screwdrivers in Lemon juice for a clean, lemon scented toolbox.

  9. This is a great thread, not only do I know now that it is not only my craftsman screwdrivers that smell like PUKE (unfortunately my screwdriver drawer is at nose level) I know now how to cure the problem & I haven't laughed so hard in a long time reading it. I almost needed the vanilla for my shorts after my laughing fit!

If the tools are stinking you are not using them enough.

  18. Desiccants are the answer. Those little packets that come in the box when you buy a new TV or computer. I always save them and toss 'em in the drawers of the toolbox. You can get 'em at sporting goods and gun stores as well. Their primary function is of course to absorb moisture, but they will also absorb odors.:)

the old acetate screwdrivers that craftsman made for many years are ussually the culprit , and you have to watch them too as if its humid in the garage they will grow fuzzies , soften ,then turn yellow and brown then the handles break off . the vanilla trick is a good one . but if they molded once it will only make it do it faster the second time ( found that out the hard way but the mold smell isn't as gaging ) . I had to replace a bunch of my old pre 1990 craftsmans ,and after stripping out and bending the blades on some of the newer ones , I went strictly to cornwall and have some used matco ones . .
