I'm not one of those guys that have a "Greasy Garage", and I do wipe my tools off before I put them away.
However... 2 or 3 of my draws smell badly when I open them! I've emptied out the draws and cleaned them with carburetor cleaner and another time I cleaned then (And tools) with WD 40.
I give up...anyone have the same problem?
My friend Jim has a dirty, sloppy, un-kept garage, and his toolbox smells better than mine....WTF!

Some old screwdrivers smell real bad, I think its from the old plastic.

Do you keep plastic handled screw/nut drivers in those drawer? Aging plastic handles (especially Craftsman) emit a foul oder-somewhat akin to vomit.

I agree with the others, its either an old screwdriver, or in my case I have a set of nut drivers in a plastic case, the case itself smells like puke!

Well thanks a lot guys, now I'm going to smell that every time I open my tool box from now on! Funny how things don't bug you until someone else brings it up!

    Bingo! :D

  9. Nothin' more offensive than a stinky box....

I also found that some of those drawer liners pick up mildew and stink as well. Have a look at that too. I had tossed some out a while back and use plain old cardboard.

There is a cure for that.
Take a paper towel, put some(it doesn't take much) real vanilla extract on it and lay across the drawer where the handles are. The plastic will eventually start to smell like vanilla.
    Really, it works.

Yep, all of my old Craftsman screwdrivers that the handles have yellowed stink like a combo of dirty socks and stinky cheese. I took them out of the box and now they reside in a holder on my peg board.

Replace, replace, replace, your wife wouldnt put up with a stink in the kitchen would she? Most tools carry a warranty to replace them. Looks like a trip to Sears is in order!!!

  19. Probably plastics made with casien.

On a related note, know how HF stores smell....that is the smell of Chinese made rubber and plastic products outgassing.

Are you sure you haven't been pranked? Nothing more fun than making a guy chase the odor from that stanky thing you stuck to the bottom of his tool tray.

I try not to crap in my draws.

  24. Somewhat unrelated but I guess they are drawing tools :)

I bought a complete set of ellipse templates when I was studying at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena in 1990. They are plastic in a plastic pouch. They have smelled like puke since I bought them - 22 years now!

Think I'll try the vanilla trick...

I'm glad to know not just my screwdrivers smell. I almost puked when I was in my toolbox yesterday. Thanks for the advise. I'll also try the vanilla thing.
