It might be Shumbert. I need to dig out some old magazines. If I remember correctly he had a max wedge Dodge 330 with a Radio Station call letters on it, before the wheelstand truck. I think maybe his first name started with an O . I will try to find the article.

i know lettering paint has a way of etching its way into the metal. just wondering if you cleaned it down to bare metal in that area if could tell anything..........just a thought.

  5. It looks like it steers from the front? but has slicks on the front too? I know there were a couple that went backwards....

It was rear wheel drive, those tires are rollers only.

  7. The "Backup Pickup" was an Econoline I'm sure.

I am guessing it might be one of shumperts earlier rides. The colors and lettering are right (Shumpert Ge) and he had some problems with the early ones. like crashing them into a few cars on a return run down the track.

Is the roof damaged? I read that he also broke a shock on one of his early runs and put the truck upside down.

Fuzzfface post #44. I never knew there were so many. How did you compile that extensive list? My nomination for "most information of the day". Wow!!

i could BS and say it took me years and many miles to put that list together but it only took a few mouse clicks. :)

I originally thought it was and still think it was an early shumbert truck, so I put shumbert wheelstander in the search bar and then clicked on the thread called excuse me, while I kiss the sky (flicker). They have that wheelstander list composed in there provided by Draglist as noted in my last post right above the list, so they should get the credit not me.

Guess it could hae been repainted along the way, but there doesn't appear to be many layers of paint on this thing.

  22. kinda looks like the first word could be thunder

i never knew there were soo many wheelstanders

  23. Maybe it wasn't a wheelstander, but a drag race truck.Years ago there was an Econoline that ran up this way.I think it had a 406 Ford in the bed.

It may not have been an exhibition wheelstander, but the extreme engine setback would certainly have made it easy to hang the hoops.

The way it sits I would say it's just an unfinished project. The lettering may be someone working backwards or it was a race truck. No signs of a roll bar, seat steering system and too much factory junk still in it to be anything more. Still it could be a great project.

Looks like it says "Show---y" for the first part. Not sure who it might belong to.

In reference to the other post on missing parts, most of the wheelstander drivers I know cannibalized all the parts they could and moved them to other creations. Like many of the parts from my original wheelstander "Magnum Illusion" were removed so I am informed and put on the Dodge truck wheelstander that Rick Mehl drove when he quit driving the Magnum Illusion for Bill Golden and then made his own wheelstander. Hard to find much current info on many of these any more.

I have been trying for years to locate the magazines my car appeared in back in 1979 or early 1980 so I can restore the car's original paint scheme before it was damaged and the original Star Wars themed paint scheme was replaced. If anyone knows anyone who might have photos, I will send out shirts or other goodies as a reward.

Sorry I could not be of more help here.

Wild Bill Shrewsberry built a Plymouth Duster several years before the Knott's Berry Wagon. It was called the "Mustard Cutter". I believe a guy by the name of Roger Ward may have been a major sponsor. Wild Bill had another race car driver out of California by the name of Mike Schmitt driving it.
