I have a 37 Chevy truck that I am just starting on. I have a 350 260hp crate motor with an Edelbrock intake and carb with about 30,000 miles on it. I also have a never fired rebuilt 1972 292 Chevy inline 6 bored .30 over, but basically stock. What is the difference in weight? Also does anyone know how much horsepower and and torque the 292 made in 1972?

probably not much difference. edit: looked up the 72 chevy truck specs, the 250 truck is about 100 lbs less than the 307 truck, and the 292 option adds 50 lbs over the 250...so figure the 292 is gonna be about 50 lbs less than the 350 like I said, not much difference
I don't know if that holds up Jim. that 292 on my engine stand in the garage was harder to pick up than a 350 or the 360 Dodge in my van. Those suckers sure seem heavy. One source says 440# for a 250 Six and add at least 50 for a 292. i dug out my Chevrolet inline six cylinder power manual and there is no notation of engine weight for the 292. I also checked several sources online and none have the 292 listed.
I have the parts to both engines somewhere around here...and I'm sure not gonna go to the trouble of weighing them all though....
Thanks guys. That is good enough for me. It doesn't seem that there is enough difference in weight between the two to worry about, so I will probably use the 292 just because it fits in there a little easier without me worrying about steering box clearance etc.
If you have already fit it I will take your wod for it, as I recall when I pulled the original 6 from my '41 truck on the '76 and put the 292 in it the 292 was a little longer than the original. It was not a problem in the '41 it fint fine but it was longer, maybe in a 36 it would be enough different to be a problem. But like I said if you already fit it then anything I say is a mute point. I will say this, I did like the 292 in my '41. I changed the cam for a crane and bolted on a set of hookers and a single 4 bbl and it was quite snappy. I wasn't out running the V-8 crowd but I was keeping up, got a lot of respect for keeping up.

Because this truck was originally a 37, when I cut the hood down to fit, it actually seemed to give me about 2" more length in the hood than a 36. I also slid the cab back on the frame 8" from where it would have been in relation to the axle originally. That got my radiator in line with the axle. That also gives me more width between the frame rails at the cab for pedal clearance etc. The one thing that I always disliked about a fenderless Chevrolet with the original style springs, is that the radiator sits way out in front of the axle.
