I "blacked" out the truck driver's face on purpose. Did not have his permission to share his likeness on a public forum. I would hope that everyone would consider this courtesy if in the same position.

 

Hey Joe sorta curious about the deal, not price but how was the seller to deal with? Have you had a chance to look it over real good? Its is what you expected? Was the seller accurate in his description? Looks like a real cool driver!

Did you take I95 South to FL? Live about 1 mile off Exit 104, which is the Savannah, Hilton Head airport exit. Stop on the way back North!

 

Been working the interior the past couple of days. At first glance, the floors were covered with indoor carpet, which got me to thinking about the rust-free comment from the previous owner. Got nervous thinking about the possible mess....

Removed the carpet and the seats. Stripped the mfg undercoat and cleaned up the rest with a 40 grit flapper disk. Floors were SOLID!! What a relief, at last some solid Cali sheet metal.

Floors are now in primer. Top coat tomorrow.

Earl: Yeah, even the inside at the bottom of both doors are solid. Cleaned up and got the insides of the doors in primer also today.

Outer rockers need some work. Previous owner disclosed that pin-hole rust. Fixing the outer rockers will be later.

 

Thats awesome rust free floorpans would be great. Good luck with your build.

Cleaned up and primered the trunk today. Solid, no rust issues, some "oil-can" because of prior work.

Got the inside of the roof in primer tonight. That completes the entire inside of the Merc, everything is in primer. Not very exciting, but I am pysched because this Merc is almost completely rust-free.

Removed the passenger door today to rebuild the hinges. Upper hinge pin was actually broke. Had to drill out 12 of the 20 fasteners. Can't remember even taking off a Merc door without having to get out the drill....

Driver's door seems fine, but going to rebuild those hinges also. Don't want to take the chance of another hinge pin breaking.

 

Replaced the original (from the factory) passenger door hinges with a set of door hinges from my other 50 Merc that were already rebuilt. Thought it would be okay. Curious, but had to shim the bottom hinge approximately 0.250" to get the door to align correctly. I put in the shim because their is no adjustment in the hinges.

Does anyone know if the hinges are built specific to a vehicle and won't fit on anyother 50 Merc? I thought a 10 bolt, 49--51 Merc front door hinge would fit any 49--51 Merc? I know they also made 8 bolt front door hinges for those years.

Going to have the original to the car door hinge rebuilt and install it. This is a curiousity that I must understand. Maybe the installed rebuilt hinge was not rebuilt to original spec?

 

Removed the cracked windshield, cleaned & painted the pinch weld area, installed new glass and rubber.

I had the original to the car passenger door hinges rebuilt. Removed the other Merc door hinges that were rebuilt because the door did not line up correctly. After some research, I found out how the factory adjusted the door hinges. Installed the original to the car rebuilt hinges installed and the door still did not line up. The trick is to bend the hinge(s). That is how it was done at the factory, no shims and of course, their is no adjustment built into the door hinges like the new cars.

Put the block of wood between the "A" pillar and door, gently close the door on the block of wood to bend the hinge and line the door. Worked great.
