Got another old ford today...

I have know about this car for a long time. I got the chance to buy it so today I dropped the bills and Bought this 1942 Ford Super Deluxe 2 door sedan, one of 37,189 built before ford production stopped on feb 10th 1942. This car is far from perfect but it's nearly complete. It's missing all of it's windows except for the back one , all the hub caps, the air cleaner and 2 of the orignal rims. It's missing some dash trim to. The grill is dented but not to bad. I needed this car like another hole in my head but couldn't say no. I don't know if I should put it in the barn for nor or find it a home, I guess I'll figure that out soon enough, for now I figured I would share the pictures with you all.






I know they are the ugly duckling on the 40's Fords , but It's kinda cool. I don't know if the engine is seized up or not ( probablly is ) but I can but a 59ab for it. ( The one I Know of is on a stand with the heads removed and it looks pretty good )
I can't remember seeing a 42 as a hot rod, does anyone have pics of one?

Is this a " black out " car? none of the trim is chrome. The door trim is stainless but that's all that's shiny.

There's so little known really about the blackout cars. The Early Ford V8 Club book says that none were known to be produced. There have been a few turn up in the past few years though. A guy in Illinois just found one recently and another one, a Mercury, is down in New Mexico. I drug mine home just about two years ago. The only shiny on it is the bumpers, guards, and rocker trim. It still pretty much sits the same way today as in this picture. The plans are to lower it and warm over the flathead eventually.

 

The trim is what has me kinda stumped, some is stainless and some is plain steel , and it's different from side to side... Is you car like that?

 

Not different styles just differsnt matterials. . . .

 

Keep it. I've seen much worse brought back to life.

All of the upper trim on mine is the same but the fenders are different. The only steel piece is the right front and the others are stainless. I imagine they were all steel at one point, can't know for sure though.

One thing that is consistent on the blackout models that I know about is that they are Super Delux models but do not have the trim or trim holes around the outside windows.

 

Hmmm... Sounds just like mine.

 

There's another few things about your 42 that share the same thing with mine. The grille, windshield surround and vent window frame all appear to be zinc coated on yours; and mine is similar.

What about the tail light trim on yours? Steel or stainless? Trunk handle on mine is squashed but cast nickel also the interior door and window handles are nickel. Dash trim is steel.

I bought 41 coupe sight unseen last year. I had the guy deliver it. To my surprise and delight, it was a 42. In real rough shape but I'm gonna try to bring it back from the dead. There's not alot of the 42's around good for you for saving it.

I dont think it is a ugly duckling at all I think it's got great lines. I'd love to have it. Get it indoors and go from there. Great score.

I am gonna decide what to do with it soon enough. Gotta get it home first! Its paid for but It's to muddy to get my car trailer out from behind my barn! Probablly be Monday or Tuesday ....

Nothing unusual about mixed metals trim. Early production 42s had stainless trim as was traditional in Fords. Later had stamped painted steel trim but during the transition period cars had painted steel trim and painted stainless trim mixed as the stainless trim ran out.
It's always a surprise when you find an all "black-out" or all stainless trimmed 1942 model car but a mixed one? SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE!
