Customs 35 3 window build thread (kinda) 77 year old laquer reborn!!!

So I made a post about how I found my dream car. And ive been working on it pretty steady, bolted together the tranny, doing brakes, running fuel lines ect. I sent out a merc flathead to get checked at the machine shop and also sent out the fuel tank to get dipped and the rad to be boiled. Ive been waiting on some parts .. so I got it in my crazy head im going to try and save the paint, while im waiting for my parts to show up. Figured you guys might wanna see the progress...

That really cleaned up..remarkably well! It's got a heck of a shine to it even after all these years!

So, was that primer or a coat of paint over the original finish? What procedure did you use to get to where it is now? The shine is pretty impressive.

The non black paint was a combo of primer, over spray and house paint. I used a mix of brake clean, paint thinner and mineral spirits to strip the paint. Sanded a few surface rusted spots, buffed with rubbing compound and then wax on a foam pad on a buffer. (the red oxide showing through was a roll of the dice and just what was under there and was no way intentional)

It is funny to think how much money people pay to make a car look like that. I have a old F100 that has red oxide over the seafoam green original paint if I knew it would look half as cool it would be off by the end of the day tomorrow.

That is some awesome work you did there, that just makes the car now. I love it!

My 40 Ford on one side was gloss black with some minor rust spots under the gray primer and on the other was light rust everywhere almost no paint ... I am guessing that one side was protected from weather and sun and the other wasnt.

 

Mostly just some osh brand paint thiner. Brake clean and mineral spirits on some of the easier spots. Used mmm rubbing compound and wax. That's about it.

Ford didn't use Lacquer! Lacquer was developed by Dupont and used on GM cars because Dupont owned a part of GM.
