Vintage shots from days gone by!

Mentioned a couple of pages back was a fire in a hotel in Atlanta. This picture won a Pulitzer Prize for Arnold Hardy, an amateur photographer who took a photo of this woman jumping to escape the fire. I've seen various sources that say she died, or that she survived to live to be in her 80's. Hope it's the 2nd.

 

That was Daisy McCumber, a 41-year-old secretary. She survived the jump from the 11th floor with multiple injuries, eventually losing a leg, and lived to the age of 86.

Look closely at the photo below her and you can see her fall is about to be broken by the hotel's awning, which has already been damaged by others landing on it.

OK. Here's my first published letter to the editor (March 11, 1971):

Hey, I was ten, and it was right around the first Earth Day. The dumping ground was a stalled subdivision project. Among the cars here (besides the '60 Impala 4H and the rare '61 Mercury Meteor 600 shown) were a '58 Plymouth Savoy, a totaled/stripped '68 Charger, a '61 Corvair Monza sedan, and a '60 Impala convertible. I used to pull parts off them - I still have the instrument cluster I saved from that Mercury before the local kids burned it.

Then he got a wife and a '56 Olds...

Kept the wife but traded in the Olds for a '63 Galaxie:

Took the Universal Studios tour in '65...

Then they went to Death Valley, where they saw this early homebuilt dune buggy powered by what looks like a Studebaker V-8:

Yeah and now the teacher would lose a lawsuit if he/she gave those out because it's "Politically Incorrect". My God, there's also an indian, or should I say "Native American" on the bag of Red Man, and no one gets mad at that.

Where i am from most people call this front wheel set-up a "rowcrop" and I know my buddy in Wisconsin says they just call it a narrow front out there, does anyone know other names it's called?

Is this a Buick? I have the same front bumper I just got last September out a scrap pile.

 

Actually, there is a Native American ex-Marine named Annie Humphrey who is an Ojibewa from Minnesota who sings about Red Man Tobacco in a protest type song.

Not saying you should pull the picture, I remember those tablets too, just wanted you to know when you marry a Native, you learn about stuff you'd never think about otherwise. And Carol is NOT a radical by any means, she opposed the American Indian Movement as a group of urban thugs.
