It's a "cow catcher" for pedestrians. They had them on trolleys. Don't think they worked on speedy autos though.

How cool are these cats! Prowlers of San Diego, 1953. A chopped deuce vicky, 3 deuce roadsters, '40 coupe and a hammered five window. Can anyone tell what that chopped coupe is..'36? The Prowlers club is still going strong.

I think you're right, and the car is a Packard 840 touring ('31). There is another shot of her in that car, but I can't find it. Too many photos....

This last photo has some L.A. noir history - James Ellroy, future author of L.A. Confidential among many other works, lived in El Monte with his mother in 1958. On June 22, he was spending the weekend in Hollywood with his father. His mother went out with a still-unidentified swarthy man in a two-tone green '55 or '56 Olds. He raped and strangled her and left her body on Kings Road, which is the street you see in this picture between the chain-link fence and the bushes. She was found approximately 300 feet from the intersection, about where the cone of the loudspeaker marks the spot. He wrote the book My Dark Places about it - it's a very good if very dark book.

Here's a pix of my son at 1 year old with our new '57 Ford Fairlane 500.
He later learned how to open the passenger side door---crawled in--pulled the shifter lever down---& with door still open, car coasted back & door wrapped around light post----Stopping the car!!
