As soon as I posted that Gable pic originally, somebody pointed out that it was a tail gun not a nose gun. So we don't need to cover that yet again, unless people just like saying the same things repeatedly.

If, indeed, it's a tail gun, then I would think the gunner would need to be darn near prone to fire the gun. Whether the Messeschmidt pilot missed his head and hit his boot, or he hit his boot and missed Clark's head . . . hell, I don't think even Gable could answer that proposition. That's the nature of ariel combat, I think.

My point in the first place was, I believe, to show that Gable was a movie star who actually put his life on the line in combat. Sort of like Leslie Howard did.

Howard was, of course, Gable's co-star in "Gone With the Wind" and left for England and the RAF as soon as GWTW wrapped. Gable lost his wife, Carole Lombard, to an air crash while she was campaigning successfully for war bonds in the Midwest. So, he went to war, much as Joe E. Brown (who'd lost his son, Don) did.

Easy Jimi, it was probably an attempt at Humor. Many other great actors went to war too. Jimmie Stewart was one, stayed in the reserves for years after the war too.

I believe this is Mt. Washington, NH. They used Pierce Arrows for the tours to the top. I know one of these still exists. Great picture!

Thanks, and sorry at the same time. Dudes, 2011 was the worst year ever. I honestly don't mean to take it out on fella HAMBers.

With three in harm's way in the war zones, I guess something tripped my trigger. Apologies and SINCERE good wishes for a better New Year, all! God bless the HAMB -- AND this thread!

This is a great pic. The gunner would look out that window and aim his little toy gun and the big one would move and fire remotely. Clark Gable was a real American hero.
