So my dad was at the dump taking some Christmas trees in for people and some trash. There he saw an older lady throughing away some tool stuff and asked her what the reason was. She said her husband had past and these were just his old tool crap she didnt want it. He pulled it out of the trash pile and it said it was old vintage Ford tool sets. He said everything had the Ford logo and looked pretty old.

  2. It never ceases to amaze me what people throw away. I used to know this guy who drove the trash pickup truck for the county. He had a barn full of car stuff that people put on the curb.

I love the landfill. It amazes me what folks throw away, too.
I got kicked/escorted out for doing donuts in my pickup. It was muddy and perfect.
Think I should call Jeff Foxworthy?

Shoot, he should have told her that he was a car guy. Maybe she had other stuff that she might have liked to see go to someone who would appreciate it. Great score though.

You know it's bad when you leave with more than you brought.

Did he inquire about anything else she might have? Maybe that Deuce hasn't run for a while and she would love it gone . :)

If I was a garbage man I would probably be divorced by now from bringing home junk every night after work....

  8. That's when you give them a card and offer to clean it all out for free as long as they don't ask what you do with the "junk" -

I know, he did not ask her anything else about if she had anymore she wanted to throw away. I wish I was there to ask but I was not. If I was...believe me I would have asked.

Is your Dad single? Sounds like maybe she was available. He could date her and play with all her toys.

How about some pictures of this great find?

  13. Out here, it is illegal to roam around the land fill, but back home in Arkansas, every time we went to drop stuff off, we came back with stuff also. My grandpa was always mumbling about how he couldn't believe what people were throwing away. I think that people haven't changed. Everyday someone will throw away something that is of value or useful to someone else. Really terrible.

  14. When my sister's husband passed a year ago she went about getting ride of a lot of things that were his. That actually is a common thing for people to do. It is part of getting over it and moving on from what I understand.

The old lady may not have wanted his old tool stuff to remind her of a part of her life that was now over and there was nothing that she could do about it.

    Just being realistic here.

  16. I got some old Ford wrenches hanging on the wall. never touched a nut and still have the original paint on them. Found them wrapped up in the back of the old man's tool box. The paper they were wrapped in said just thought you would enjoy these. Gawd knows how long they had been in there the paper was all brittle and stained.

Value? who knows, they are mine and that's all that counts I suppose.

My dad used to work in the public works department of an exclusive subdivision south of Milwaukee. When he started they had him on a garbage truck. It was amazing what the upper income would throw out just because it was no longer in fashion. When 10 speed bikes became popular he was getting high end 3 speeds that were like new. On Saturdays they would have a couple of garbage trucks set up at the public works garage for people to dump their junk off. The guys my dad worked would fight over who was going to man the trucks because they knew they'd get their share of bikes, TVs and other like new stuff. Bad side of all this was my dad had a garage filled from floor to ceiling with all the junk he brought home. He wouldn't sell a thing because it's going to worth more some day. When he died we rented a dumpster and filled it full of all his treasures. Don't worry, I got in and sorted out all of the good stuff.

On the other hand, I know the day after I die my wife and kids will have a fire sale of all my stuff. The first guy that shows up and offers to haul it all away for free gets it all. To them if it's not farm related it's not worth anything.

When I was a kid we spent a day or two a week on the dump when school was out, weekends when not. How else would a 10 year old broke ass kid get enough porno and bike parts to keep them happy?

By the same token I am constantly amazed at people wanting $350 for their 25 inch TV from 1992 that "works good" or $200 for their 1977 GE refrigerator.

  20. I've noticed the inside of garbage trucks are filled with shit the garbage guys save. Crap tied on the side, etc.
    A hoarder's dream-job.

  21. yup, should have spoke with her, she was probably sitting on a gold mine of cool stuff and hauling it little by little

  22. We dont have a dump here .... we have a "transfer station". Everything is put in different areas depending on metal-type and salavability. Everytime I visit the place it is straight to the "metal" bin for stuff I can use .... they let me go through the stuff because I speak alittle spanish (I guess) ...!LOL

Ain't that the truth. Around here it's really bad. There are quite a few hoarders and they are all convinced that their junk is worth a ton of money. I'll admit I'm a pack rat too but at least I know most of the stuff I save isn't worth much.

I just stopped to pick up a nice barbers chair off the side of the road last week. When I picked it up there was a nice old heavy duty floor jack there too. Both worked great with nothing at all except loading em up..

Was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas in the early 70's. The Engineering batalion I was in had to supply the fort landfill with equipment opp. on a rotating schedule. We made a killing on just the returnable pop bottles!!!
