    Infamous shot of this car was one where the tranny blew costing Ron Rinnaro a part of his foot.

    Where was this taken?? I recognize Mt Baldy in the backround. Colton Maybe??
     
  9. It does look a little like Colton, but I was not aware that the SCTA ever had anything to do with the Colton strip.

    It does look a bit like Colton with the mountains in the background, and I think that the SCTA briefly supported early drag racing...

    This is Harry Duncan's "Jitterbug" 34 coupe with an injected 354 Chrysler, ran mid 130s, pretty fast for the mid-50s...it later became the Pacific Auto Body coupe run by Goodyear and Serpa...Harry ran a number of very neat drag cars in the early days of drag racing, most painted purple as seen in this photo, also ran Bonneville, and one of his engines powered the HRM "Suddenly" 57 Plymouth to a bunch of records.

    Had to go back to my Drag News CD to find this one....Boyd Pennington in his Chrysler powered roadster, think it is Colton, it did run parallel to the mountains, as in this picture.

    Boyd is well known to most on this site, updated this roadster to a blown-gas burner, later a ran a Bantam bodied altered, and finally a fuel dragster. He died in a terrible crash at Lions, after being diagnosed with leukemia.
     
  16. Besides the SCTA trailer in both pictures, the other common thread is prennenial SCTA starter, Bob Higbee. Bob was the starter at the first Bonneville meet in '49, and was chief starter for SCTA events for over 50 years. His words as you prepared to make a run always had a calming effect. You knew, if Bob sent you down the course, all was well.

    So basically, the brakes were just completely stock? It was just a matter of finding bigger stock brakes (such as the lincoln brakes) They didnt sell any special type of "drag race only" brake shoes for 39-48 Ford brakes?

    Body by Mr Ed. His shop was about a mile from my house. He had a lot of those bodies lined for a good long while.

    Which car was this? What type of rear axle was that? Also, the rear is suspended??

    Thats Don Pruhdomme (spel chek) and judging by the shirts I bet thats his '70 Cuda F/C. Rear is a Dana 60, dunno what the rear suspension is. Looks like they're partin that thing out between rounds....

    The rear axle is not suspended, Alot of early chassis did have suspention but there are two black strut rods going vertical to the shoulder bar. And judging by the ladder bar set-up this chassis was probably at one time set-up for coil overs.

    Snake's car here ws probably one of the first "narrow" or dragster style chassis of the era. I was going to say '69 but possibly '70. The older cars had both front and rear suspension. The black rod is replacing the original rear coil over. This is probably a relatively rare shot as I think this car was either wrecked or replaced with a solid rear car.

    Dana 60 rear end. They probably had pre set up ring and pinions since they were touring match racers by this time. That's what we did a couple years later with the Dana 60. They only lasted about 20-30 runs so with a pre set up one you could just pop in a new ring and pinion. Probably easier than a Pig style 9" Ford. The 9 in had not been race developed yet and was not as strong as the Dana 60 which was a 9 3/4 gear. 4.10 ratio was the norm then but a few ran 3.90.

    Lots of both went in the dumpster at our shop. :eek:

    I loved Luzaders coupe. it was one of the last really comptetive traditional bodied gassers. I am trying to think of a few other representatives that were competetive with an old school body-not street roadsters as thats what the class mandates. Rod Shop Anglia was a strong runner as late as 1970, as was fellow Rod Shop team member Dick Shroyers Thames panel.
