Was down at my buddies in southern IN a few days ago. The 63 Galaxie is a customer's car. The SOHC motor was in the car but in need of attention. Its all fresh again now, I know he waited quite a while for new cams from Isky. Looking forward to hearing this one soon!
The 64 Custom 500 is his own car thats been an ongoing project now for 3 or 4 years at least. The pace is picking up now on both of these cars.
A lot of you looking at these pics have seen pics or the youtube video of a black 64 Merc with a SOHC motor as well. He also put the motor in that car as well.

Wouldn't the R car thread be reserved for the real ones? Maybe these cammer cars started life with 223 power? The OP didn't say.

And right you are! I believe the 63 is a 352 car originally, and the 64 was either a 6 or a 289 to begin with.
In addition to the Galaxie projects, he is also working on a 66 Fairlane 427 engine for his former 289 car. Here is a pic of the engine going in that one.

Thought I'd post a few pics of my own 64. Not an "R" car by any means, but kind of a 427 look I've always been going for over the last 20 years. Originally a C-code car (289) automatic car, I've used factory parts to change it over to a 4-spd with a 64 390 and a lot of original Hi-Po external engine items installed that would make it appear as a 427. With the exception of the current 8" rear wheels, its got 15" K-H wheels and 6-leaf rear suspension from a parts car. Still have quite a bit of stuff I just havn't changed yet simply becuase I havn't got to it.

Neat thread! I am currently fitting this FE to my 63 1/2 with a 4 speed toploader, should be lots of fun.

SOHC motors run sweet . I drive the hell out of mine . once you get past all the rocket science in the cam timing they are really good engines.
going to be a super cool galaxie ! keep us posted how about a video when they get it fired up ???

Do any of you Cammer guys have any idea how many of those engines were built?

Someone had posted a picture on another thread of a warehouse full of Cammers...
I think the photo was from 1966 or '67...
They might have been stored at the R&D Ford building in Allen Park, Mi.

I have never seen any hard and fast numbers, but if memory serves, Leo Levine stated in his book on the racing history of Ford (Ford: The Dust and Glory (1901-1967)) that Ford made around 500 motors, and another 500 or so sets of heads. Leo was really close to Ford's racing operation, and wrote the book in '68 when production numbers would have still been somewhat available.

What I consider to be the much more interesting question is how many SOHC's did the likes of Connie Kallita, Ed Pink, Don Prudhomme, and other drag racers of the era fragment when they had a bit too much nitro in the mix?

Of course now with Dove and one or two others reproducing the heads, timing chain covers, and intakes, any one can have a Cammer if your pockets are deep enough.

I believe that once NASCAR banned the Cammer, Ford liquidated their entire inventory through Holman and Moody. H&M was then responsible for selling the motors. This is a great picture though.

Don't you mean....."after Chrysler successfully had the Cammer banned from NASCAR because it threatened the Hemi" ? Right?:)
