Hey guys, I ended up getting these as a partial trade. Apparently these are from a 400ci SBC. Is that the case? He also stated these are the stock pistons. Also, what is the best way to clean them? as you can tell they are atrociously filthy. Last question, as I dont really have any use for them at the moment; whats a good asking price for them? thanks a ton for reading this and offering any help you can! ^ Yes I whacked my thumb at work, but its on the mend.
Those dont look like anything special. Just dished stockers. pin height and bore tells you everything. If their std. they might be worth scrap
^Not really, the truck was worth really nothing so... It was these, plus cash, plus a bunch of other stuff. K, I'll take some measurements then. That "side mirror" is actually the tail light of my Daily driver 2007 Saturn Aura XR.
... I mean make the pistons into a side view mirror for a car... I made one about a year ago let me hunt down a picture.... Like this but modify the piston to be the mirror...
if they say GM cast on the inside, they're probably standard bore, and are worth their weight as "dirty aluminum", like ten-twenty cents a pound. If they have a size stamped on the top, like 030 then they're used oversized replacement pistons, and anyone who's rebuilding a 400 to stock and overboring it would rather buy new pistons than run used ones. See above about the value of scrap.

Chevy 400 are 4.125 bore Chevy BBC 427 / 454 is 4.250 but the top of that pistons looks a little strange, does it have a valve relief? Best way to clean them is soda blast them and then pressure wash.
454 has valve reliefs. And the rod looks too small. Pics of the whole thing would be helpful if you want to figure out what they are, but they're still probably worth their weight in iron, nothing more.
Well here's a chinese piston w/ no valve reliefs.. not the exact same, but pretty close. but like everyone has said.. they're worthless. Might get a couple bucks for the rods... but they're not exaclty rare. Sorry, not a 454 piston. Part number is 454np30 Sealed power. Althought it is funny how closely it resembles yours.
^ RevHead, you guys are killing me! Here I thought I had SOMETHING of a bit of worth. Yeah there is no valve relief, just a smooth top with the high bumped ridges. About the thumb, thanks for the condolenses I guess you can say. It was a lot worse. At work we have these impact drivers & impact u joints that have worn out "ball pin" securing springs. Problem is; they're all worn out, as the sockets aren't held in place by much of anything. So that thumb is the result of having a 1-1/8" - 1/2" socket hucked at it at max RPM from an impact U joint. Oh well, at least that was proof enough that we needed all new tools, so it worked out good in the end.
I also see that the wrist pin is offset as it the one in the photo of the new one. 454NP30 PISTON GM V6 229 3.6L But the bore is wrong??? The 229 is a 3/4 of a 305 by displacment.
The one I have in my hand has a (number) 1 stamped on the bottom portion of the rod that bolts on to the main rod, so I assume so. So you guys figure these are for a 229 or a 305? jeez, that older guy had no clue what these were. "OEM Chevy for a 400 Im sure of it". He said he had some overbore (.040 over) 305 pistons kicking around, did I get these instead?
I wouldn't spend much time worrying about them as even if you can pawn them off on someone else they probably won't bring enough to get a six pack and a burger.Ou Outside of scrap value the only thing that they would be good for engine wise is if someone had a shortblock that they were an exact fit for that had bad pistons and needed the pistons and rods for a quick and nasty low buck rebuild using a ring and bearing rering kit from one of the vendors that sells them cheap. That would be an engine that had a bad case of detonation that ate up a few of the pistons or one that had other piston damage. For that you would have to figure out exactly what they were and then they still aren't worth much. I think I have at least three quite similar sets out in the sheds that I was saving for the rods but the whole kit and kaboodle will probably go for scrap when I clean the sheds out.
