Vintage shots from days gone by!

Great shots of one of the thrill shows put on at the Florida State Fair in Tampa. They were usually part of the IMCA sprint car Winter Nationals held there every February to kick off the racing season. Joie Chitwood's Hell Drivers were frequently there as well.

 

This represents the classic 50's in so many ways. Culture, politics, American way of life, etc..

 

Early SCCA seemed to be more receptive to allowing women to compete. It also seemed to draw a "cosmo" group. The racing was fun to watch as the tires and supension allowed the cars to drift in the turns. Any early Mini or Abarths in your stash?

 

This movie incited James Darren's interest in drag racing. In late 1972, he fielded a funny car with sponsorship by Schlitz Malt Liquor.

 

All alone on the big open highway, except from my favorite monkey and pictures of circus fat ladies posted behind the head rest.

 

I got to take a tour of the hotel less than a year before it was razed. You could feel the histeory. If those walls could have talked. Truly a symbol of an era where elegance and class was a sought after trait.

How many remember when surplus military planes graced public parks or were trailered around and displayed in shopping center parking lots? I remember an F-86A at Mosswood Park in Oakland in the '60s and an F8 Crusader at a park on 19th Avenue in San Francisco in the '70s. This is a P-51D, probably around 1954 or '55 as the Mustang went out of active service. A few years later in 1957-58 you could buy one in flyable condition from McClellan AFB in Sacramento for about 1500 bucks. They actually had advertisements in local papers for the surplus auctions where these airplanes were sold. You had to tow it off of the base to a nearby airstrip to fly it home. Some were barged down to the Bay Area to be 'civilianized' by aircraft brokers and then sold as sport planes.
