I am thinking of buying a Crosley car, and due to the engine bay size i have been thinking about different engines. A ford duratec engine from a Ranger would be a good option. My question is about the transmissions. will a t5 trans bolt on to a bell housing from the engine. If I am unknowing about this combination please let me know. Thanks, Mark

Ya better either get a tape measure or a shoehorn . That engine is a good 50% longer than Crosley.

The only 5 speed manual for RWD is the Ranger 5 speed which more or less has truck ratios. However Quad4Rods has a T5 to Duratech bell housing, but it's a bit expensive.

So you can run the truck trans or the expensive T5 bell housing and have several T5 transmission choices.

  4. The adapter is about $450. Might consider a Miata (rwd with 5spd)?

A buddy of mine has just put a built V8 60 in his Crosley pickup - now terrorizing the streets....

  6. Weasel, that wouldn't be the gorgeous little red Hotshot that's been in a magazine or two over the last couple of years, would it???

Well it's a brownish red - ferrous oxide and just completed a couple of months ago. It's a pickup - not a Hotshot - so I guess that'll be a no. I'll see if i can dig out some pix....

My wife's sewing machine is bigger than a Crosley engine. My lawn tractor's is pretty close and probably has more HP.

Check out a 2.5l duratec from a contour or cougar, smaller and prob more powerful than the Ranger v6.

Thanks for the comments. I was thinking of the duratec because it has an alluminum block. Unsure of the actual engine bay dimensions. I can't measure it because the car is in Kansas City. Is the 2.5 smaller than the newer 2.3? I saw the quads for rods site, that is why I asked about the t5 trans with the truck bell housing. I was thinking I would need the shifter farther back than the truck trans. Any other thoughts or ideas would be helpful. Mark

I think the Ranger Four will be much to big for a Crossley pickup. The guys who shoehorn large engines in Crossleys sit in the back. I take it you do want to fit in it!
Have you thought about a motorbike engine? Awesome power and awesome sound. The Suzuki Hyabusa is popular. Check out the Smart cars with Hyabusas on you tube.

I heard somewhere that the Miata transmission is a bolt on for the Duratec, maybe just the smaller ones though. The Miata engine is very nice too, more traditional looking with it's polished alu twin cam etc.

I never thought about a motor bike engine. The miata trans is a good idea. Once again this is all about the thought stage. My buddy that owns the car is going home this week and he will get some dimensions for me. This should help in the process of the decision.

The Ranger 5 speed, while a truck tranny, does not have truck ratios. Here they are: 3.72, 2.20, 1.50, 1.00. 0.79.

I have heard that it is possible to put the innards of a Ranger 4.0 tranny in the Duratec box. That will give you 3.40, 2.05, 1.31, 1.00, 0.79.

I have installed a 2.3 and M5R1 in a Sunbeam Alpine and the Ranger ratios are fine. The shifter location is very bad, this is the extension I made for it. It was mostly mostly stuff on hand, I think I have $4.00 in it and it works just fine. A hamfisted guy might want to make it more robust.

If you decide to get a Miata 5 speed, be sure to get one for the Duratec. The older trannies have a totally different bell housing.

A problem I had with the Duratec is its width. It is 14" wide across the pan rails. In a car like the Crosley, that might be a big issue. Also, the stock manifolding takes up a lot of real estate. I had to fabricate intake and exhaust.

The Ranger M5R1 has an integral bell housing, so no way it can be used to mate up to a T5. Personally, I am pretty happy with the Ranger trans.

  18. I have one of these engines on a stand in my garage, I can measure height, width and length for you if it would help.

  20. Thanks Weasel! I've been looking for a Husdon hood for a while now for a project- LOVE the lines of the mid-40's Huds!!!

    Sorry for the OT moment...

B Blue, which Miata 5 speed was made for the Duratec?... and would it fit a Zetec (just happen to have a nice Zetec in my garage)???

I don't remember the year, something like 2003 and later. No, it will not fit the Zetec. The I4 Duratec bell is unique and pretty recognizable as it is almost perfectly round and has about a dozen bolt holes in it. Another unique feature of the Dutatec is the starter bolts onto the engine block and the bell has a cutout (no bulge) to clear the starter.

Most folks do not know this, but the Zetec engine, 1.9 Escort, 2.3 pushrod Temp/Topaz engine, as well as the 3.0 "Vulcan" engine all used the bell housing/clutch setup that was used in the 2.0 Pinto. So a Ranger 3.0 tranny will bolt up to the Zetec.

The old Ranger 2.3 SOHC engine bell is close to the Zetec pattern. It is necessary to use stepped locating dowels and the two upper bolt holes do not align. Some guys just use four bolts, others weld an aluminum chunk onto the bell housing and redrill to fit the Zetec block. But anyway, that is a cheep way to mount a T5 to a Zetec.

Here is a pic of the Duratec bell.

It's been years since I've seen one out of a vehicle but what about one of the Suzuki Samari 3 bangers? The transmission is divorced from the transfer so that isn't a problem and they usually have five speeds. With the right rear end gears that should run down the highway pretty good.

Hayabusa would be a good fit. I think a few Bonneville applications are exceeding 350

According to Google a Duratec is 2004 and newer.

That makes it way too modern for the HAMB.

But its performance potential makes it perfect for a thread on the Dogfight Forum.
