Pictures are too small... You might want to work on your camera settings... ;)

Hot-rod-dude jr, great work on the kustoms & diorama!

Zed! Always pushing it! Looks great!

Froghawk, laying the tape old school!

Yesterday, I started messing with trying to a make a 1950 Mercury accesory steering wheel. I used the rim from a 62 Chevy kit & scratchbuilt the center & spokes. I made a little jig to be able to hold the rim at the proper distance from the base of the center, & then, glued things together.
Reference photo on the right & the wheel in the jig on the left.

In the next few photos, I have a small dome shaped piece of clear plastic temporarily in the center. This will be replaced with a drop of clear epoxy after painting, & it will have a more correct shape like the 1:1. Under the clear piece is a flat piece with concentric rings carved in it. I just need to find a way to make a tiny Mercury head for the center. I still have some tweaking & detailing to do, but it's getting there.

I had tried the first time a 2-tone paint job in the style of Larry Watson. I have to make some corrections in various areas. Paint is Mica Red over Gold from Zero Paint

Steve, good to see You are building models again. Your Merc looks fabulous! I was going to steal the steering wheel from my Danbury Mint Hirohata diecast, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Should You ever have that Merc accessory wheel cast I'd love to get me some. Have You looked at the trunk emblem on the AMT Merc, it has a tiny Merc head in it. Maybe You could use it instead of becoming cross-eyed trying to scratch build one.

Thanks , hadn't seen one , I was going to make my own
look like I'm off to the hobby store...

  14. Put me inline for one of those merc accessory wheels too. Your merc build is just awesome. This is one detail that really needs to be cast. So many iconic customs had this wheel, it's a wonder nobody ever cast one before.

Obvioulsly, I'm not as good as all y'all.

I did a story this week about promo models. I've never taken pictures of these particular cars before, so maybe someone'll be interested.

I have seen a couple of models where the builder opened up the decklid. How is this done? I have a 559 buick promo model that I want to open up the hood. Any suggestions? Pictures? Also I saw some "Watson style scallops for sale on ebay once and did not save who they were made by. Anyone have any idea? I have looked at places I can find on the net. Thanks TP

I just opened up the truck on my hudson model using thread, you cut a little hole and slip a piece of thread thru it and move it back and forth and it will cut a nice fine line. It takes some time but works great, I saw a video on youtube a while back also.

Nice stuff on display today. Thanks for posting.

Matthew, keep up the good work. It's great to see your work. That candy orange paint is skillfully applied.

  25. This thread is great and I enjoy the skill and talent every shown each and every Sunday! I was digging through some old boxes with the intention of revisiting my model building after a bunch of years and found an old project. I hope it's not too late to add some pics here.

I had intended to build a replica of each car I've owned - one of the first of which was a '51 Chevy coupe. I attached the (modified) top from the '49 Ford to the body and header of AMTs Chevy hardtop...

    The car:
