I agree it's a good looking car Jimi but I think the 39 Studes and Mopar range he also designed were the nicest and they went downhill from there with the sealed beam headlamps.

They sold DeSotos here Roadkill but not with that bed along with Fargos and Dodges and there's still several Desotos around town here.

Here's a "now and then" related to "Shake"

 

The Dodge and Fargo versions used Dodge station wagon rear quarters. The Desoto version is sporting a set of 56 Plymouth wagon quarters.

I would imagine that most of your Desoto trucks came from OZ but The Australian production was not exported to many more places than NZ. Since Australia had it's own production facilities they did not tend to import much from the states. Would love to have some pictures of the Desoto trucks for my website.

 

My Grandfather had a 39 Studebaker President. I was always impressed at what a really nice car it was, much nicer than my fathers Kaiser Manhattan which was a good bit newer. My uncle had a 37 Ford coupe at the time and my memories as a kid at the time was it was a hideous automobile.

I sure thank you for posting the pic of Port Arthur. I grew up there and rode my bike over that bridge over the intercostal waterway. A large wooden rollercoaster was built right where the cars are parked. It was called The Comet. A large ballroom where I saw Chuck Berry and Fats Domino would be built just to the right. A large marina was dredged to the right of the road to the bridge. There was also a large ammusement park with all the rides. I loved the bumper cars. Sabine Lake is just behind the photographer. Great fishing.

My father in law was just starting in the carpenter field when he found himself working here. He helped put up the framing for the Disneyland Castle.

 

Of course by now most know that there wasa lot of bad blood between certain cast members. Vivian Vance hated William Frawley and she resented being characterized as an older women to Lucy's character, when in fact she was younger. I think Lucy held her age much better.

 

have been using milk etc to try to promote moss on stone work but never heard of it as dulling spray. have seen low budgets shoots get away with pure and simple etc and saw on last job that dept was now using various anti perspirants - but they looked like milk where the heat of the car's dark duco in the sun was oversprayed, however.
apparently it's all about the bloody boom op's reflection ...

What would be the point in this? Too bright for the camera or something?

 

That was done to cut down on reflections from studio lights - remember it's supposed to be outdoors and only lit by sunlight. The paint is dulled down too.

Also note the rope extending from below the front bumper for towing the car on the set - watch the scene where they rear-end the old Caddy touring and it's pretty obvious!

 

It was a long time after Dave's accident before Sears got back into racing. At that time Allstate was their trade name for tires, batteries etc, later just insurance.
