Hot Rod Magazine - April 1950

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Nov 10, 2011.

  1. I was looking at the Hot Rod Magazine covers this morning and I thought it might be interesting to see the iconic images of what it looked like when I/we were born.

I know some of the guys here pre-date Hot Rod Magazine but I thought it might be interesting for you guys and gals to check the site and see what the editors thought was cover worthy in the month of your birthday. HRP

  2. That page on the HRM site is at least 5 years old. When it was first posted, they said you can vote on you favorite cover frome each decade, and they would post the results. I think the editors, or webmaster have forgotten all about it. The page has not been updated since it was first created. I guess they spend too much time looking for Camaros to write about.

But in January 1962 you and your roadster pickup were on the cover of Hot Rod,,,that's something to be proud of,,,you were making history and to be quiet honest that cover inspired me and from that time on I knew I was gonna own a HOT ROD! HRP

December 23 will be here in notime, wonder how many of the Hot Rod cover cars still exist? I'll never forget the day Ralph Hope stopped by the shop I worked at with several boxes of old magazines he had subscribed to. I never would have thought a guy with a 1927 Rolls-Royce would have been into Hot Rodding, I think about him every time I look at the old Hot Rod and CT Dry Lake newsletters he gave me that day.

  9. I gave up after the first two 15 second popup ads. HRM still has no clue about online presence. They need to fire Frieburger and hire Ryan.

The November '52 issue of Motor Trend may have been on the stands when I was born in August of that year. The odd, radical 49 Ford custom on the cover of that issue is in my garage now.Cosmic shit in the grand scheme of things,I guess.Or maybe not.

That's my birthday cover too...I've got a mint copy of that one at home.

  13. I agree. I just subscribed (fund raiser for my niece) and while there is a good article on Salt Flat racing in the latest issue, the rest of the mag is junk.

I know that it costs money to publish the mag, but the focus is on commercialization of the product (HRM) and not the content.

    Just my two cents.

I'm fairly sure that is Norm Grabowski's T that became the "Porter" in the My Mother The Car TV show. Harrah's owned it at one time, not shure who has it now. :)

I was reading this exact copy last night in the toilet. The parts may be the same but Style & Trends do change.

NOT my birthday, but remember the cover shot well, since I just graduated from Inglewood Hi school in 1950. Bob Pierson, Joe Torvick,& Mckinley used to cruise the school in their look a like white '36 3wnd coupes with Appletons, skirts,Desoto bumpers, twin pipes & lowered in the rear.
They started their own club called "COUPES" 1946-1950.----Don

  28. If you open up Volume 1 No. 1 to the mast head you'll see that Hot Rod was established November 24th, 1947. I was born on that day. Maybe that explains the way I am.
