Rex Easton in Fred Tomshe's Offy at Wms. Grove 1954 and Bill Randall at Reading in Ed Stone's Offy in 1957. These cars are reputed to be the same car. Any information about the present location of the Ed Stone Offy?

Bill, it looks like the dzus fasteners are in the same location and those fat welds on the radius rods lool the same. No idea who built the chassis though. Could just be consistencies in construction?

 

The Rex Easton car was built by Fred Tomshe. The other Tomshe sprint car became the John Fray Offy.

 

Isn`t the Fray car in the EMMR currently?

 

I think it is owned by Marlin Heller, the gentleman who also owns the GAPCO car.

The article on A.J. Watson says he built 23 of his roadsters and all survive. I think that's amazing. If I owned one of them it would be parked in my living room.

 

Posted this on the Midget Thread with no replies. Maybe someone here?

Need some "vintage" information. Need one left and one right hand threaded bearing carrier nut (2 nuts) for 2 inch tapered Halibrand rear end. Know any part numbers? What the original nuts were from? Have one right hand MOPAR nut, not round and notched like orignals, but it fits, Part number 52069306, believe it is from Dodge Truck, DANA 60 rear end. Both sides were right handed on that rearend though.

If anyone knows, it would be someone on this thread.

Look online, McMaster-Carr, search bearing locknut. They have almost everything ever made. An amazing company.

I have to agree.

 

I've read that Steve Miller (owner from Mexico NY) has restored approx 50% of the Watson roadsters ever built.

One of Steve Miller's quotes:

"I was one of those guys in the late 1960s who butchered those beautiful old Indy roadsters, making them into supermodifieds to race at Oswego Speedway," he said. "Now, rebuilding them is like a curse, punishment for what we did to them 40 years ago," he said. "There's a lot of work trying to put the chassis back to their original configuration, and we have to chase all over to find as many of the original parts as we can or just make new ones."

Update, the the bearing carrier (birdcage) nuts on the 2 inch tapered Halibrand rear end are 10N (right hand) and 10LN (left hand) bearing retainer nuts. Nothing special once you get to someone who knows. McMaster-Carr lists right hand nuts with a nylon lock ring, but those are thicker than the standard nuts. They do not list a standard nut or left hand threaded nuts.

Bearing Distributors Inc. (BDI) stocks the 10N nut, but could not locate the 10LN at any of their distributors or warehouses across the country. The nut was available, but at a high cost since there was a minimum "special order" price on just one. However, since I was in no hurry the nut could be added to the companies next order from that supplier and they would contact me when it was available (2 - 3 weeks). The counter guy at the local BDI was very freindly and easy to work with. Still will need to drill and tap holes in the side of the nuts for the original set screw locking device, but at least I will have the nuts.
