Hey Guys help me out,is there a rear worthy of V8 power that will bolt in my 50 ply coupe or do I have to have something narrowed. It measures 60 1/2 outside to outside now and I would like to go at least a couple of inches narrower. To me maybe a 57-59 ford at about 57 1/4. Give me your thoughts or experience. Thanks
68 C Body is supposed to be a bolt in, but there's a lot of axles that will work with a relocation of spring perches. E body also, but they are getting hard to find. A number of Ford & GM axles are the right width, & Ford has the right bolt pattern.
mopar "B" body also requires some spring perch mods. and drive shaft alterations Ford ranger, exploder, lotsa choices.
my car has a jeep cherokee rear as well but it's only 1/8 narrower.why do you want something so much more narrow?
I wanted to put wider wheels on and looks like the well will handle them so I thought I could get a little reverse on them with 3-4 inch narrower rear
Is there a certain year to look for? Are some better than others. Also considering this for my 50 Plymouth Suburban. Thanks.
Will anything narrower even fit the car? S10 2WD is like 58 inches wide, wrong bolt pattern, but maybe look at a Ford Ranger or something -
If I remember correctly the earlier 8 1/4 from the Jeeps have 27 spline axles and later have 28 spline. Both are great. Very tough and readily available practically free. They are 5 on 4 1/2 bolt pattern. Good luck. BloodyKnuckles
I put a Ford Granada 8" under my '50 Wayfarer. 57 3/4" wide, 5 x 4 1/2" bolt pattern. I used '88 Grand Marquis wheels, 15 x 6 with 4" backspace. NO backside clearance issues, and WAY easier to get the wheels/tires off with severe lowering. With skirts you'll never notice them being inset more than stock.
If you go much narrower, you need to watch out for tire to spring interfearence. The stock wheels only have 3.5 inch backspace and 4 is about maximum. So why put a narrow rear with wheel spacers?????? 7 inch wide rims will fit stock if the back space is not to deep. something like the MOPAR police spec rims will bolt on as long as you don't run a low aspect ratio tire probably 70 series max.

I was going to suggest Granada 8-inch or a 68-70 Mustang 8-inch. Dirt simple and still can be found without too much trouble. Slightly narrower than your orig rearend, same bolt pattern.
Hey guys thanks for all info--choose a 1960 t-bird rear 58 1/2 out side to out side and 2 1/2 X 11 brakes. Have to change sping pads but I want to change springs anyway thanks again
I put a '96 Mustang 8.8" with disc brakes and traction-lock under my '47 Plymouth (same axle width as yours). It was almost identical width and has the same 4.5" bolt pattern as the Plymouth. The Ford Explorer 8.8" rear is the same width and the later ones ('94 and up I believe) came with disc brakes. These rear ends are easy to find and are dirt cheap.
