G'day. Been lurking around the HAMB a while now so o thought I'd start a build thread for my 51 chev 4 door.

Long term plans are to two door it and chop it but for now I'm just doing up the suspention and drive train.

When I first got it. It had been restored but not very well, but there was no rust in it. Got it road worthy and registered and drove around for a few weeks like that.

Then I lowered it a heap just buy flipping some leafs, flipping the rear shackles and putting in some 3" blocks. And cutting the springs in the front.
Shaved the door handles welded the seam in the bonnet(originally a two piece bonnet) shaved all the badges and what not off it and painted everything but the roof in a flat black sealer, got some chrome smoothies and Coker white walls Also frenched the head lights and took all the over riders and stuff off

Then I frenched in some 50 ford shoebox tail lights(flipped vertically) and that's kinder where I was up to until the other day.

And tonight started pulling everything down including the stock 216 and 3 speed. To put in Holden front suspension with disk brakes and a small block chev with a munsie 4 speed. Also going to use an XG falcon diskbrake rear end and just notch the rear of the chassis for clearance.

I will post more pictures of the work mentioned above when Im at work (faster Internet)

Any tips or tricks or sugestions will be appreciated!!

I'm using a HT holden disk brake front end but I'm using HZ spindles and brakes and a shortened VB commo rack

I only ask because I had a frame graft done on my 52 before I knew enough not to. It's a HX front and it is a bit too wide. Not sure how the HT measures up. If I did it again I think I'd use Jag.

In the meantime I'm thinking of ways to narrow what I have. In the long term I might even redo it how it should be. The power steering and disc brakes are nice though.

    Keep the updates coming.

Yeah I'm pretty sure hx is wider?? Not 100% sure tho. Iv put hz spindles on my HT front end so that has narrowed it a little bit. As it is now it's about 18mm wider each side (36mm all up) than the stock chev front end. But I'm pretty sure I can put layland P76 rotors on and that will narrow it a further 30-40mm so I should be pretty close to stock but I'm unsure and I'm kinder winging it at the moment.

I have heard the P76 rotors narrow the track a bit. Is it as much as 30 -40mm? If so I should look at that as an option. I'm guessing they aren't all that easy to find these days.

apparently you can get a "kit" that has new rotors with bearings and bearing spacers to suit holden spindles. and its supposed to bring it in 15mm each side so yeah 30mm all up.

I remember that day. It's amazing how much more in touch you are with your environment when there's not much metal around you. Semis scare the crap out of me.

It has a 327 with a powerglide and 9" diff. You'll work out the headlights soon enough. Let me know tomorrow. Oh shit, it is tomorrow.

iv got so many questions for you!

power brakes? if so is your booster under the floor or on the fire wall?

    steering rack or box?

how is the 9" mounted on original leafs or on later model wider leafs?

I wouldn't mind some pictures of all these things or some of them if you have any???

Yeah mate, no worries. Um I didn't flip the whole leaf pack just took the leafs apart took one out ad flipped the two bottom leafs to the top of the pack and turned them upside down so it flattens off the leaf pack. It's kinder dodgy and was just a temp thing for me but seemed to work alright

HQ-Z brakes, disc front, drum rear.
HQ-Z booster on firewall. Home made hanging pedal assembly braces the booster back to the dash

    HQ power steering box

9" shortened and axles redrilled for Holden / Chev pattern. Mounted on original Chev springs with 2" lowering blocks

If I have any pictures of the work they would be old style prints, buried somewhere in a box

I also used a HR column with a powerglide shifter to work with my PG.

    Now, what about those headlights?
