I scored this trunklid a few months ago.

It is in incredible condition, and I am to the point of getting ready to media blast the body, but there's one thing holding me back. This trunklid is too cool to mess with.

I planned on painting my 5W Ford Blue, but this trunklid popped up, so here begins my dilemma. Definately wold look like crap with a blue car, red trunk.

Red cars are a dime a dozen, and the Florida salt-air really takes a toll on ANYTHING red, so that option is out.

If this was your car, what would YOU do with it?

    Honest feedback appreciated.

Oh, one more thing... IT'S NOT FOR SALE :D

EDIT: Photos of trunklid after 8 coats of wax on Page 3, Post #41

I would either find another 32 that fits this finish or sell it for good money and buy a replacement trunk that needs repainted. Cool is right! Know where the car is??
You may even get some pictures of the original car on this site.

I'd either build around it and make the car to match (not a bad option at all with how cool it is) OR hang it on the wall for your own personal collection. I'd never sell it and I CERTAINLY would'nt paint over it. That thing IS traditional hotrodding all by itself.

  12. Of course, you paint the car Amoco blue if you want it blue.

But a car done to match that deck lid would be pretty sweet, too.

  13. i'd shine it up, and paint the rest of the car to match. either that or i bet you could make some kickass money off of it and get one you'd feel ok painting.

Then BOTH of you will have a decklid that will not fit your coupe. :D

    A 32 3W decklid will not fit a 32 5W

Leave it, Paint it, Its up to you. If you paint the car blue and leave the trunk lid as is it will look like ass. If you try to do the rest of the car like the patina on the trunk lid, good luck. You will never match it. Hang it on the wall if u like the look.. Take pics and paint it.

  16. Bingo...did that with a NOS tailgate I found for my '60...couldn't bring myself to strip & paint

Your choice. If I had a car that needed a deck lid and was getting ready for paint and had only that lid it would have stripped and in primer already. No piece of a car should get in the way of finishing the project.

How about stripping and repainting it but first take a bunch of photos so you can repaint the logos and lettering on top of the new paint?

  21. If thats a real deal item, there is no way you can paint over it and if it was mine there is no way anyone would get it out of my hands.........unless they wanted to swap for a pines grill :)

Man up and paint the car around it!

I just put about 8 coats of wax on it. Shined up ok. The top half was taped off for a before/after reference.

Now that it's shined up, paint rest of car to match that. Or as the one guy said, take pictures and paint your car the way you want it and then paint the stuff back on exactly as how it was.

If you didn't care, you wouldn't ask for opinions, right? So, there's really only two choices; trade it to someone who will hang it on their wall, or get another one and hang this one on your wall.
My choice; get another decklid and put this one on your wall, it's way too cool to give up or strip and paint over. It's history.

  29. Hang it on the car.. Fog/fade the edges and "jam" it the blue you paint the car.
