So true. If you determine the quality of an engine based on lifespan then 392 Hemis must be junk. There is more to an engine than just how long it is made.

To anyone who didn't dig the Buick mill, I did it, and it came out pretty nice! Awesome street motor with some good power, it's different, and totally period correct. I made the motor mounts and the headers, used a Offy intake and 500cfm carbs, and picked up some nos chrome valve covers, chrome rear sump pan, and Offy velocity stacks.

I saw this car at the Worcester Summer Nationals this year,..great job. I was talking to you about the car at Staples in Shrewsbury because I wanted to hear it run. Didn't know it was a new build,..great job!

Since most of the stuff on this traditional hot rod site adheres to a '64 cut-off, what other readily-available stock motors in '64 were putting out 325 hp/445 ft-lbs?

The quick answer is 'not many', so seems perfectly sensible to replace a 283 with a 401 if you had the opportunity... just like the 60's, bro!

DO IT!!. Back in the 60s I put a 364 Nailhead and T-10 4 speed in a 55Chevy 210 sedan. Had altered spindles on the front to raise her up a bit. Gave the neighbors a thrill pulling the wheels up hitting 2nd. gear. Go with a 4-speed. DO IT, DO IT!!!

56 just doesnt get it! The poll has spoken,go for the Buick.Anybody can bolt a small block in a tri five Chevy.

 

56sedandelivery is a great guy, and I really dig that sedan delivery. We built a nasty 283 for the In-Bomber restoration so I do love Chevy mills, but I figured this was a pretty nostalgic way to go. Buick, Olds, Caddys, Lincolns...they used everything in the late 50's/early 60's.

Glad to hear your doing up a 283 for the In-Bomber. By the way that's a clean installation in the sedan.
