Another favorite sub-set in hot rods for me are early 50's ('49-'54) GM, Ford or Chrysler cars done up with some hot rod vibe. 60's style....mags(?), rake(?), no hood(?), blackwall or skinny whitewall(?), chromies(?)....whutcha got?
Let's NOT include nose high gassers in this.

here's my HOT ROD 49. I'm hoping some day it will look pretty much like the black photochop above. got a louvered hood, tach on the dash, natural finish 14 x7 Americans. gonna be low all around, with a slightly smaller tire than what is standard for a 7" wheel. kind of a mid 60's vibe.

Bring the pics on! I've heard from old timers that more shoebox Fords were hot rods than customs in the early 60s; I want to see some!

Great thread. Hotrod is the look I am going for with my '53 chevy. I appreciate the customs, but it's just not for me. I like the look of this one. Anybody know what size tire is on the rear of this car?

I always felt this was the definition of a rodded car, rather than a gasser.
done with style for beating people at stop lights. dont know if thats what the person that built it intended.

I've put 12,000 miles on this one in a little over a year just cruising. I figure on doing it black sometime and doing a better job on the flames. But then I keep hearing, let it alone and drive it the way it is till you're ready to join the lawn chair crowd.

I agree, it's built for gittin, not for sittin............ Not really into the show scene anyway as there's never a class for hot rods.....

I'd go so far as to say it's a Kustom PROP car. GREASE IV?! hahahaa
Speaking of Grease....I wasn't around back then, but that movie struck me as a bunch of very EAST COAST kids that were supposed to be in CALIFORNIA?!

Anyway....Here's an abstract version of a 60's style, early 50's car....probably Alloway(?). Cool car. Hot Rod.

Can't let "Beauty school drop-out" go by that easy......
I thought I'd try some karaoke when out with friends and spotted the drop out song in the book. The people really got into it!

    Yep, shocked me too.........

No offense intended, but customs are a very different animal than hot rods. Customs are all about showing off, and nothing about performance. Hot Rods are all about performance and nothing about show. On a custom you
change things just for the sake of change or appearance, Where as with a Hot Rod, you generally take things away that add weight or complication and add only what makes it go faster, or in some cases handle better. See? Now you can get it!

And yes, it is entirely possible to dislike customs. I've got a good friend that hasn't talked to me in about a year or so over this very subject. We used to travel to show together an awful lot, but he wanted to look at over painted parade floats, and I wanted to look at primered stuff that goes so fast it'll make your brain hurt. We always ended up arguing about it...

Then there's some who play both sides.......
In keeping with what you said about loading up a slow custom, and stripping down the hot rod.

My custom 55 is totally stock in the drivetrain and gimmicked up a bunch...........

The 55 rod was stripped, and lightened up a number of ways and built to git. Only weight added back in was the roll bars.

Guess I can talk to both you and your friend Louver........

LoooverChip is right.....Aaaand, there are grey levels between Rod and Custom, but for this assessment, just muddy the water. Another interesting footnote and perhaps a bit of irony, is this; when building a car with the pursuit of all out performance, you can quite often end up with a machine that is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Confusing I suppose, but not to most of us.
