I have been going to the shades run for a lot of years. I guess all of them, I went when it was a cruise in gatlinburg in the 70's and the fire department brought out the fire hoses to break up the crowds. Yes the traffic is bad but you know that going in so just go and have a good time. There are more hotels now than people going so you can find rooms on the strip with vacancies.

Me making it is up in the air now. Seems the in-laws have pulled a surprise and booked us a trip to Disneyworld the same week/weekend on their dime. They want to take their great grandson before they get too old (in their mid 80's and late 70's). I need an extra day off to go but may not be able to get it...if not still going to the Forge,

  5. Been going many years.Looking forward to going this year. Still think its your best chance to win a Hot Rod and the 50/50 has been as much as 23,000 to the winner. Can't wait.

  6. Looking forward to it. I plan to drive over there Saturday for the day. 'Will be the first trip of any distance for my redone coupe. Randy & Danny save me a space.

I have gone to Pigeon Forge during this week/weekend for many years and sometimes never even made it out to the showgrounds, as there were hundreds and hundreds of cars up and down the strip to look at all weekend. Saturday always seemed to be the best day to go to the showgrounds as a spectator, especially for the deuce gathering!

Advice: Take bicycles to ride the length of town and back and park them here and there when you find a group of cars you just have to check out.
It's usually fairly hot too, but there are plenty of places to duck into for a fountain drink/beverage.

And there are all kinds of cars to see in town, especially 50's & 60's vintage, of which Fords are my main interest in seeing & photographing.
Being that close to the Smoky Mtns Natl. Park is also a big plus. We usually go hike a trail for a few miles and always glad we did, no matter how hard it is to pry ourselves away from the old cars.
Unfortunately, the evening/night time cruising scene is highly clogged with just traffic, which kind of takes the fun out of being out there in your own car, but still a good time.

After a long dry spell we are returning to Shades this year. Going down Wed. Going to relax for a day or two before the show. If you are a gear head you will enjoy this show. Yes there will be gold chainers but there will be beaters too. See ya there.

To the first timer like the Gentleman considering coming in from Texas. All of the posts regarding where to stay are on point. I normally come up to 2 or 3 shows a year there in Pigeon Forge. The show is a great. The POST 49 crowd is not real bad. You can overlook what you dont like. WillowBrook Lodge on the main strip between Light 4 and 5 in Pigeon Forge is a good one but is probably booked. There are some nice ones in Sevierville. You might have to start out a little earlier in the morning to get into PForge but at night the advantage could be once you went to bed you wouldnt have to hear rumbling all night. Also at the main exit off I-40 Exit 407 there are a couple of nice hotels and restaurants. Now that puts you 20-25 minutes away on a non busy moment. IF it is busy you are at least 2 hours out. I love Shades it is a good show. I likely wont make it this year as i am watching my pennies to be able to go the first Goodguys show at Indianapolis Motor Speedway the following weekend. Back roads can be your best friend around the traffic that comes on Friday evening and All Day Saturday. Sorry for ramlbin. I like Shades and love Pigeon Forge. Pics from 09 Show at the old site.

We will be there. We really enjoyed the show last year and since it moved to Dollywood parking lot it is alot easier to get in and out of and less dust then the old ranch it was at. For the first timers try Kimble cabin rentals we have had great luck with them and if you got 2 or more couples to split it can be alot cheaper than a hotel.

  18. Where was the OLD parts swap meet last year? Walked through the "Vendors", but couldn't find the usually large "Old" stuff, just a couple of guys set up next to it. I really liked the old field better; lots cooler than asphalt under a broiling sun. Flat too. Down side was it was mpossible to get in and out of, unless you know the back way.

Weather's cooled off some over this way. Highs in the 80's, low's 60's into the 50's; maybe it'll get even better. Been there when you needed a jacket at night. Perfect!

Oh my.... Might want to think about getting Granny a dropped axle for Christmas, and talk her into letting grandson do his magic to that one. Hopefully we can meet up this year.

Hey guys, I live about an hour away from Pigeon Forge and might be coming to the show for a day. My 52 is not road worthy yet so I might bring my other weekend car. Anyways, I'm in need of a rear bench seat for my 52 chevy sedan. Do you think I will be able to find one of these there? Is there a certain area that people sell stuff or is it everywhere along the strip?

  29. There are people that sell along the strip but there is also a swap meet at the show and there was some people across the street from the show last year. HRP
