If you say it's for the Atomic Industry you can charge an awful lot of money for stuff. Even more than for aircraft stuff.

Speedpilot -YES YES - Twinmaster not so much - bit too modern with the digital readouts.
But where would you find a workin Halda these days ? I havent seen one in use for 30 years. Used to have one back in the sixties when it was the latest tech - I would love to own own one again.

What about having classic instruments redo an original set that came with your car. Have them go through and make sure they work and that's probably going to be the best gauges for your car. But then again you have a lot of work in your dash so maybe keeping what you have is the best solution.

I for one will probably just keep trying to find old gauges. I have a 5" 40's SW tach that I plan on using in something but I'll need to find a few more curved class gauges to accompany my tach. It all comes down to if the money is there when the time comes.

A friend of mine owns a 40 Ford coupe, with an instrument panel I love and some of you may recognize. They are labeled as "Autoavionics" in my point of view they are very very cool. So after some research I got to the manufacturer: Westach, here is the internet address:

    http://www.westach.com/

Ryan, I think these guys can make your instrument dream come true, I'm just waiting to have another project and $$$$ to buy from them. Hope this helps.

I have a metal case Twinmaster under my desk here. They aren't that modern, late '50s, early '60s. It's just a variation on a taxi meter. Parts are still available and you can get them repaired. They are very popular with the folks who run vintage rallies.

beautiful, i was introduced to the world of automatic watches about ten years ago by a friend who cherished his Sinn, among the others he collected. i had to settle for an Oris. someone is missing an opportunity here, great idea, great post.

I'm watch-obsessed too. The watch I wear daily is a pretty cheap but awesome Stuhrling self-winder with a clear back and about half the area of the front is also clear so you can constantly see everything working. The rest of the face is art deco style. Yet another vice I inherited from my dad.

  12. they look cool as hell but they are on the heavy side visually. I wish someone would reproduce AC styled gauges from ww2.

Although I can see the attraction, these "clocks" don't do it for me. Now 1950's Hamilton automatics on the other hand...

This thread is obviously about the gauge concept but the watches are pretty great too.

The Sinn 556 is the best looking of the bunch and the cheapest too. It's my favorite watch, but alas, I have other shit to spend money on first.

I did see this rare Chrysler watch come up on the Forward Look site. And let me tell you, as the owner of a '57 Chrysler, it took all my self-control to keep from buying this thing.

"It’s like building a “traditional” hot rod with millions of rivets, nickel plaiting here, brass there, engine turning yonder, and all kinds of other hoopla that doesn’t really serve the ultimate goal of going fast with soul".

^^^^Oh boy does that ever resonate with me.

I am so tired of the Retro Deco Nouveau bling on everything - it is so, well - Coddingtonesque. The new billet for 'attention whore sheeple' who are so desperate to try and draw attention to their 'variation on the same old theme same old car' theme.

That having been said, I have been a watch junkie for decades but took a self imposed twelve step program - living in Switzerland for a couple of years did not help the addiction. Nirvana for me was actually getting to experience an Ulysse Nardin Astrolabium Galileo Galilei on my wrist - hardcore watch porn! Unfortunately like the hotel California' "You can check out but you can never leave".

For a long time now I have looked at watch bezels and wanted to use that theme in a bigger format, but nowadays I am more inspired by original instruments from the 1930 - early 1950s - usually of Italian origin.

I have a set of custom buit Westach gauges which were built for me a dozen years ago and they are primarily an aircraft instrument manufacturer, which brings me to the point that the word 'instrument' is so much more fitting than the word 'gauge'....

I got a 50's Mig fighter clock for the 5w...I like the simple clean face and "glow in the dark" numerals and watch hands. The best part is that it's manual and must be wound for a 24 hr. period. Simple, clean design.

When my wife and I were into the TSD rally scene in the early 1970's we did not have the money for such luxuries as Halda twin masters or (I know not a gauge, but cool just the same) a Curta Calculator:

We ran in the totally unequipped class and still had a blast. Still I always drooled (and still do) over those cool gauges and calculators the folks in the other classes used.

Pretty freakin COOL!!! Dig that one a bunch! No nonsense...where do you find this stuff Jeff??

The SINN watches are masterpieces. Yeah, probably not directly ready for traditional hot rod gauge use the way shown(a bit busy on the face), but it sure would be nice for someone to make a gauge that was perfect function(worthy of the term "instrument") and just lived in the "fringe" details...cool little intricate bezels into sapphire glass, etc.. Simple, but elegant. The sort of stuff no one notices, but you relish to know and own...

It's funny, I spent a lot of time thinking about the gauges in my Dad's car. And we were pretty much just copying the "football" SUN tach. It still added up to 3-4 different layouts going back and forth between Classic and us till we were happy. And really, not many people comment on the gauges in my Dad's car. I almost take it as a complement, cuz if it was the first thing people mentioned in that interior...we failed.
