Projects M/F-ing HOT RODS, '32 3W build for a HAMB member!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by ELpolacko, Aug 12, 2011.

  1. Up front apologies to those of you building patina-d farm trucks on S-10 frames, but the HAMB is for HOTRODS! And it's time we do something kickass.

B1gDaddy (Anthony) contacted me a while back about doing a new frame for his 34 coupe. We hashed back and forth and then he sold the car and bought what he really wanted. A 1932 Ford 3 window Coupe!

Not just any coupe either, it was being built by Rudy at Fullerton Hotrods when it's owner couldn't go forward. They did a killer 5" chop and set it up with just the right rubber and rake.

The car went to Tucson and found a temp home at HiSpeed where they did shot it in DP90 and put it up for sale.

Then I got the call to go get it!

So it sat safe in the shop waiting for the collection of parts, Anthony wanted a period correct for a late 50's to early 60's build. He purchased a real angle plug head, dual quad 327 and we argued about rear axles and transmissions. Finally settling on a Winters Quickchange prepared by Dick Spadaro and a Tremec TKO five speed.

Then it was all on me to kick this thing into gear and get moving.

  2. I pulled some critical ride height dimensions and such. Then cleared my table of lost projects and got the car stripped down to the naked chassis. Set up I fabricated some quick stands to bolt it down solid and pull out the original K without mangling it.

Then came the mockup, setting the engine and trans in place with the firewall and radiator to cement the proper locations of things. Yeah, I cut the snot out of the firewall, but don't worry. I think I know how to put it back together properly...

  3. Nice one!
Will be coming back to check on some updates for sure!

  4. Locating everything where I wanted it with Anthony's approval, I dimensioned out a few things and set to tapping at the keyboard and coming up with a new X-member that looks right and is a bolt in!

The intent is to leave this chassis unboxed and still get some chassis stiffness and not compromise the look of what we want to achieve.

Clamping it up and drilling the holes

Then the first installation of the rear half assembly

Pretty sure I want to use a 39 style pedal assembly, here is the body mocked up in place

  5. Ooops, I posted a 3D picture of the bolt in rear legs when using a stock K-member above... This is the correct one:

    Awesome build!!

Any thoughts of offering formed 'K' or 'X' members like this for 32 frames in the future?

  17. YES, emphatically YES I WILL.

I need to go steal my father-in-law's frame for some test fitting. Or if someone has a nice stocker I could make a sweet deal for them. Just has to be a nice straight gennie.

    You like?

    Muahhahhaaaahahahaha

That is VERY good news!!!! Keep us posted PLEASE!! I personally like the look of formed X-members and K-members way better than anything tubular for a nostalgic build.

I love it. The quality level of craftsmanship from you and others just seems to be getting higher and higher. I would guess economical laser cutting has had something to do with it...

Thanks and I look forward to the progress.

  29. Just some fun stuff, the section I have finished as a 3D pdf file. If you download it, click on the image and wait a second then you will see the image render out and by holding down your mouse button and moving your mouse around, you can rotate the system in space.

What application did you use to make that PDF? I have SolidWorks and this would be a really useful file display! Very cool!
